My wife works for the state of TN can retire after 25 years with benefits. So she will be 53 when she can retire if she wants. I enjoy my job but the day that I can I will be out of there. Been buying rental property I have two houses so far almost payed for and will keep buying them until I make enough profit each year that I don't need my regular day job.
 
I have been looking at building storage units and RV and boat storage on my place. Low upkeep. They are builing a new 175 acre subdivision on the other side of town, people always have more then they can store. I have 2 mobile homes I can rent out, maybe put more on the property and make more income. I am 30 minutes from Tx State University and 30 minutes from Austin. A lot of renters out there. Run cattle behind them
 
In retirement your biggest expense is entertainment. I could go on a trip and spend $20,000 and after that it is gone. Doing what I do I can spend $20,000 and enjoy it more, then at the end of the year sell my calves and get maybe $15,000 back. Lately with selling my bulls I have even been making a small profit to boot. I'll have to look into that as any money I leave to one of my daughters she will make short work of that.

Friend of mine a some mini storage units and does very well with them.
 
I just celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of my 39th birthday and I have been setting at this work computer since six this morning.
I intend to work as long as I can and as long as they will have me....
For starters I am not sure I could maintain my life style on retirement income alone...
I just got me a nice new horse and need to be able to afford to ride her....
Had a great ride yesterday at York River State Park....
My plan is to try to live while I am still alive.....
 
My wife is really struggling with her job right now. She's been at it for about 11 years now and is bored, and it's isolating-she works from home. I try all the time to remind her of the positives of her job, and how lucky we are to make as much as we do compared to other people. Neither of us love what we do, but it allows for us to do the things we like. I'm not really thrilled about retirement because it means I'll be getting older. And as it stand I have to work until I'm 65 to get SS due to laws that only Congress (ie a bunch of rich old men and women) will be unlikely to change. So, I plug away and make myself happy in other ways.

None of this looks appealing, but the checks are nice I'm sure. The way I look at jobs like this are, someone has to do it, and it might as well be you b/c it will pay alright b/c no one else wants to do it. It's like being a plumber at a strip club, it pays well b/c it's so awful.

I've always thought the same about doctors. Who the hell would wanna be around sick people all-day. Or run his finger up some fat guys azz...I can't figure it out..

After working in healthcare for the past 12 years, there are plenty of days I MISS being a plumber! Good honest work, that when your done, the folks are so happy with you...healthcare on the other hand; well you can bust your azz to make something happen or save a live and it seems like someone is still pizzed about something. Literally blows my mind some days. Makes me glad I have a few rentals and can work at hospital on my terms instead of being 'owned' the way some unfortunate souls are.


Side note* plumbing work at a Chinese restaurant or funeral home is by far worse than a strip club! Honestly!

I work physically hard now and get a lot done but at my own pace, I would not have liked to have had to work at a pace to satisfy a boss in paid employment. I never enjoyed my work as a self employed veterinarian however in retirement for the last 10 years working with my own cattle and small farm I have enjoyed life so much if I was to drop off my perch tomorrow I would go with a smile on my face.

I feel much the same way Ken.
 
Please don't take this as bragging because it is not. I realize how lucky I am. I was forced to retire by the 2008 housing market. By the time I closed all of my offices and paid all of my debt I was 250k in the hole. I had long owned a small 20 acre plot and was able to lease an additional 110 acres. I have gradually built up a small herd of 25 mommas and they provide me with just enough income to maintain fences and winter feed. My wife still works, by choice, and for insurance. I spend approximately 50% of my time volunteering for Hope Hospice and the other half earning any nickel I can. I do get a small SS check and I have never been happier. My life is so much more fulfilling than ever before and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
 
One question is will your employer let you stay til you're 65 or older? My company likes them straight out of school.
 
"Retirement" is subjective. We "retired" when my husband was 54 and I was 40. Had zero interest in traveling, golfing, country clubs . . . so we bought the ranch, initially because he wanted to hunt & fish. And then we dove in & bought 33 bred cows. And holy rump roast, life has never been the same! Hardest work we've ever done and I've never been happier. Or as dirty. He's getting older and has health issues, I'm now running the ranch by myself and have every intention of continuing until I'm physically unable or senile.
