I went duck hunting yesterday morning. First time I've been in years. It was beautiful! Dawn broke with a big crimson sky that was absolutely breath taking. Ducks began coming into the cypress pond before shooting time. That was fine with me because I love watching them and listening to them whistle. I got my limit from the first 2 groups that come in after shooting time. A drake and a hen. Wood ducks are some of the most colorful and beautiful creatures on earth.
These are not the best pictures but they show some the color. The red you see in the pictures is not blood. That is their color.

Beautiful birds. My favorite. I don't go anymore though. Don't have the restraint you must have to stop at two. You did stop at two didn't you? :P

One of the most enjoyable parts of deer season is watching wood ducks.
Pond sits in front of one of my stands that a small spring feed branch runs by it lined
with oaks.
Every morning they would fall in to feed and play.
I spent many hours enjoying their company and antics this year.
They still amaze me at how the can fly through timber at the speeds they do and not wreck.
 
Before the drought I had about fifty that would go back and for between my big pond and a neighbors up in the hills. He's kind of like me in that we're pretty protective of our wildlife so they were pretty comfortable around us.
I also have one hen that makes a nest in an oak tree in our valley pasture every year. Last year I just happened to be changing irrigation water under that tree when she decided it was time for those ducklings to leave the nest and I got to watch all of them drop and her lead them away.
 
got a hen that nest in a pecan tree In my yard. the hole is probably 30 feet up. We saw them a couple years ago come out and she led them off toward the pond. The speed they fly into the nest is unreal. We also have a pond full of button wood bushes where the roost everynight. the noise from several hundred on the pond is very loud.

A few years ago we shot that roost one morning. It was amazing to say the least. They would lift off the pond straight up and then take off. It lasted about 15 minutes.

Duck season went out here yesterday. I only duck hunted 1 day this year and that was early teal. my nephew hunted a lot behind the house and they did pretty good and killed quite a few gadwall (florida Mallards).

I have a few each year on my pond, but not year round--just on and off. I don't have any hollowed trees around my ponds anywhere but have been told I can build duck nesting boxes and hang them on the big pines around the pond and it will attract wood ducks. Anyone ever tried it?
Can the young really just climb that straight vertical hardware cloth thing to get out of the box? How high up on the tree do they need to be?

Greybeard, that box will work. Anywhere from 6 ft up to 25 ft will do. I don't guess there is a particular height but higher may help keep predators away. Chicken snakes are probably the worst predator. If you have big bass in your pond I wouldn't put one up because the bass will eat the little ones.

It's amazing to watch a wood duck fly into one of those.
