Just curious how much times have changed and how different it is across the country

I don't know how to answer this. I'm a woman and I work for two women. I've worked for men and women over the past 40 years, not much difference if they know their jobs.

I can't answer that either but I think when children are involved one person should stay home and be a homemaker. I might be in the minority here, but I think it is more important to build a family than to build wealth or rather raise our standard of living to a point that we don't have time for the most important things in life. JMO

I tend to agree with you Jo it sure is best for one person ,male or female, to be home with the kids if at all possible .But circumstances don't always cooperate.

Things sure have changed in the last 20 years though.I remember being given surgical gloves to wear in my forensics class in college so my hands wouldn't get dirty :roll: .No guys ever had to wear them.

If my instructors could see where my hands have to go now :shock: :P :lol: :lol: .

At the risk of being shredded to pieces here, I have got to say that theres a lot of jobs a Woman can do as good if not better than a Man, especially when it comes to patience such as working Cattle. My Wife comes up with ideas that make things so simple I always say "How come I did'nt think of that"?

My Wife is on occaision smarter than me. She's much more of a smart a$$ too.! Imagine that?

Miss Daisy, I am the "office" person for two large animal vets who are both on the road pretty much all day everyday, except Sunday (unless there's an emergency). It's a very busy practice and it has grown a lot over the last couple of years...mostly cows, lately a lot of llamas and alpacas, and an increasing number of goats, an occasional pig, no equines.

Crowder, I sincerely doubt anyone will shred you for saying that; I think the people on this board have pretty much always had respect for the women who work with cattle and just look at all the knowledgeable women on this board! I find it admirable that you credit your better half for her helpful ideas. (Ummm, some of us have to make the other person think it's "his" idea. ;-) )

Some women are handy. Some aren't. I hosted (hostessed?) an all-women work day for some town women I knew to vaccinate, etc, 80 cows one day. Even though most of them had never been within throwing distance of a cow before, we got the job done. The biggest difference was we had wine after dinner instead of iced tea and beer! But generally, I've never done a job that doesn't have both men and women working at it.

(BTW -- nobody thinks we're pretty to look at? *shuffling off to re-do my hair*)

I think we are lucky to have a vocation that we can include both our wives and children.

Having said that, I'm going put my head in a noose. I believe that puting our children under the care of a babysitter or day care while mom and dad go off to work is a curse on this country.

I know I'm old goat, but I do believe this.

First off.. women who are stay at home Moms are probably the hardest working women there can be. Secondly, this idea of women working out of the home came about during the 2nd World War. Not saying it was a bad thing, but it was just the way it was. I honestly think that if a married man and woman have children, that its best for the woman to stay home and instill their own values upon their children. Need to live within their own means, and the man should treat the woman as he would want to be treated. This in turn would make plenty of jobs for the men who need them, and make for a good family lifestyle and relationships. But thats dreaming nowdays it seems.

I would love to do that, but I have three in college. One in mortuary science school, one in law school and one in reform school, uh, community college... And still have one in junior high.

I did take a job at the school so I could have summers off. When my kids were little I enjoyed working because it got me out of the house. I enjoy my kids more now that they are getting older...

I too believe that staying home is hard. I feel the pressure to get everything just right to justify staying home. Plus, when I am home, my husband gets lazy because he thinks I can do everything. I noticed when I started being at home more that he helps me less and less. That is the only thing that makes me mad about staying home.

I have known some pretty worthless women that stayed at home under the guise of raising kids.

But it is a great gig if you can get it.

Amending my first statement... I have a special needs student who was out all day yesterday in the ER because of low blood pressure and today she's back in school. Family comes first, and I don't know if she has to go back to work cause her boss is a jerk, she thought her child was well enough to send to school or if she didn't want to stay home with her. I suspect the last reason.

I just called her to tell her to come get her child, as she is acting unwell again. I doubt she'll beat the bus here. I should have kept my mouth shut...

I have been real lucky. I kids have always been very very healthy. And they like school. That's important.

I have always worked outside the home, except for a couple of times in my life, and that was for less than a year each time.
It isn't always the best thing, but I tried hard to make the time I have with my kids count. And I have been lucky enough to have jobs that were family friendly.

No noose as far as I'm concerned. I absolutely agree. How can our children learn our values when they are basically raised by someone else? Now, having said that, I also understand that todays economy often forces people to put their children in daycare - simply because it is, oftentimes, no longer feasible for the husband to earn enough to support his family. A lot of parents are having to choose between being able to raise their children, or support their children.
