Lazy calves.

First day at the grounds with the calves, my nieces and nephews have 10 here this year and 8 of them are from my brother's farm.
Still getting some of them weighed and washed up. Tomorrow they will have judging.
I'll probably be adding photos to this thread frequently the next few days, just to warn everyone ;)
 
I'm so mad... I forgot my camera card and had to make do taking pictures with my phone... Versus my camera with nice clarity and a MUCH faster lens.

Here is my niece with her steer, she was pretty tough even tho he started getting naughty with all the excitement today

Here are the young heifers, they will be big cows, but if they are like their dams, they will be easy keepers.

Here is Elinor, Ron would like her, she's very intelligent.
She couldn't squeeze between the two jerks that didn't leave room for her, so she nimbly found a place she could lay without choking herself on her ties either.

The four lightweights, from 881 (the heifer) to 1081. But nice calves considering they were born between June 15 and July 2 last summer.

The twins out of my "long lady". Wish they could have been older and about 300 pounds heavier, they would have been so much more impressive I think in the ring, but they still are a nice pair.

Animals look better in person. Kinda partial to the blonde steer though. Kids did very well with their animals and there display. Nice job all around. All the beef looked good this year. I don't think anything was head and shoulders above the rest. The grand champ has the squarest butt, good animal. I must have just missed you, they said you had gone to the concert. Thanks for the pics.
 
Thank you Ohrmundt Simmentals, I was sorry that I missed you, I like him a lot as well even though he isn't near as deep in the rib as many would like to see, he's a very smooth calf out of a very young promising dam.
She has a new little heifer that is developing very nicely, I think she has even more eye appeal than her blonde brother and I will enjoy watching how she develops and turns out.
The blonde steer was out of Sundance Kid (reg# 2353900), and his half sister is out of much older lines, but I think still very useful, DS Caufitime (reg # 1317277)

The Grand Champ calf was actually my friend's granddaughter's calf. They are super nice people and my friend helps us out on the top lines (too precise for me)
I was glad that they got it and did well. :)
 
Yeah our fair does that herdsmanship as they call it, where they are graded club by club of their display and keeping things neat and clean.
Three of the kids did well on the sale and the other three got kinda skunked... :(
Buyers seem to forget that even tho to buy a beef is a big chunk of money, they get more meat back than on a pig or lamb...
The beef didn't go NEARLY as high proportionately as the lambs and hogs by a long shot, makes me really sad for the kids because the beef project is also double the length of time...

I do have pics from the sale, including the grand champ, I'll have to post after all the take down tonight.
 
I do like your head board and hope that the kids were recognized for their creativity. It is cute.
Sometimes at our fair, a beef project and a lamb or pig will bring the same price. It seems that the price depends on who the parents know or work for, and how popular the kid is.

My camera was having issues firing when I got to David and Leonard, Leonard's half brother got a white ribbon in the ring last year, but ended up Reserve Champion Carcass, and looks like baby brother will have something delicious under the hide too, we'll see the results at the Market Animal Picnic

Love these little girls, they are so sweet, and if you'd make them the same color, they are quite uniform for having totally unrelated sets of parents

Now we are all done with this fair, but in two weeks the kids will be going to a smaller one, the small heifers and the steer twin and a new one will go.
The kids and calves should do well, I know its a small fair, but the last two years our cattle brought home best of show.
The steer twin will be my prediction this year, though I could be wrong. His dam (my "long lady") took best of show two years ago.
He's not super huge (947 at 13 1/2 months old), but he is an attractive calf to me. In about 2-3 months he'd be nice to look at on my plate ;)

Really enjoyed your photos and the story about what is happening. Congratulations on your exceptional cattle.
 
Good stuff - nothing better than good kids and good cattle. We'll get our show season started next weekend - maybe I can get a few pics to share.
