wiring a solar panel

I bought a 50 watt solar panel for my charger, cuz' I got tired of changing batteries every 2 weeks. It has 8 lugs on it and I see where 2 are connected to the panel itself. Do I just wire directly to the battery posts from any two lugs on the panel, and also hook the charger to the same battery posts, or something different? There were no directions, just the panel. Can anyone help?

not an expert but their are lots of things you need to know first you have a large panel for a fencer. I just got one that was ten watts I had to have some little box added to protect my fencer and then it was all hard wired together. You should check with manufacturer or dealer of your fencer on proper wiring. good luck I do like mine it is nice to be in a remote pasture and not lug batteries out all the time.

Not going to be any help on the lugs from the panel.

but you do need a charge controller between the panel and the battery. they are not expensive. without one you will ruin the battery.

I have a 75 watt panel charging a deep cycle battery and pump water with a 12 volt pump on a twelve volt timer. pump two hours per day. keeps the tanks full for the livestock. small pump and not a lot of head of livestock. five horses and five cows drinking from the system now and still have excess water as well as 700 gallons of storage.

Much more wattage than I need but the original system I bought needed that much umph and the pump crapped out from pumping water that I did not need all day long.

I use the same panel and a much smaller and cheaper pump now.

I have a 45 watt panel charging battery for dc lights in my stable.

both have a fairly inexpensive charge controller that I got from backwoods solar. some cheaper ones were not quite as reliable.
 
The panel has 2 terminals usually from which power is drawn . The supplier could probably tell you or should. Put a multimeter set to read voltage accross the terminals and you should get a voltage up to 18 volts depending on how much light is reaching the panel.
The meter will tell you when you have the polarity right. Provided its set on the right voltage setting you swon´t blow anything up ,meter or panel.

As above voltage coming out is up to about 18 volts on a 12Volt panel so a regulator of some kind is needed to feed your battery no more than 13.8 Volts or you boil your battery
