Not always, I have used diferent lick tubs. One I can get locally comes out to about .25 to .50 per hd/per day, depending on consumption. Most of the time I get the stalks for free as the owners want most of the crop residue off. If I used a more expensive supplement, or had to pay a lot for the stalks it wouldn't be cheap, you are right. The stalks aren't always available. If the area has a good fall most of the farmers use shredders and work the field black, so no grazing. I only have a few crop farmers that have fields with access to some kind of water, and we have to install a single strand electric fence. The wire and fiberglass posts have paid forthemselves many times over.
