Winter care for Strawberries

What should I do for my strawberry plants this fall? I have heard that I should cover them with straw. This is the first year that we planted strawberries.

My grandmother used to heap pine straw on them once it got cold. She had a huge patch that came back every year.

Did she cut them back or leave them alone?

I'm pretty sure she just left them alone. Her patch was about 60' x 100'. She would get grandad to bring in wheat straw and dump it near the patch and she would spread this and pine straw on top of it. Don't know what she did in the spring. Our winters aren't that bad though. We wil have a couple of killing frosts and a few days in the mid to high twenties.
