My picture may have come with a solid tie for last place. But it is a picture with some history behind it. That freighter is going down the Columbia River about 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It was taken 205 years to the day since Lewis and Clark paddled by the same spot in dug out canoes. Times they have changed but the river keeps flowing.

I and most of the local kids grew up catching tadpoles, having mud fights, swimming, learning about fire, cooking damper and having billys in this creek. It is mostly filled in now and the land cleared. The tadpoles are all gone. It was good to get my kids there and reminiscing the old days. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A part of me inside feels sad many kids of today are missing out on growing up outdoors.

Yes, we don't have much left now. All that land behind was orchard only a few short years ago.

I told Alisonb the historical points about that pictures. She replied that she had to google Lewis and Clark. Strange that they don't teach important American history in South Africa....

I wouldn't expect some from another country to know who they were. I would bet there are a lot of Americans who don't know who they were or the role they played in American history. I just happened to live a lot of my life very close to the route they took and things named for them.

I should have taken more time to look thru the pics before I voted. As I went backed and looked more I liked Nesikep's picture more and more. I didn't really realize what it was the first time I looked. Its a great pic IMO.
