Why I Raise Simmy's

Pretty impressive mothering instincts, however, I believe most any breed of cows will protect
their calves. See what happens when our "docile" Hereford cows see a strange dog in the pasture
or a calf bawls in distress....They will circle the wagons as well.

Growing up I remember starting with a Shorthorn base and then using Herefords, Simmentals and Charolais for a few years. Didn't take long to switch to straight Simmentals as they make the best momma cows. More milk and maternal traits than any other breed I've ever had around. I came across a Simmental cow quite a few years ago in the pasture that had just calved and she had trampled one coyote into the ground and 2 others were after the calf. Got there just in time as she was just about done. Luckily she'd had the calf back up against a stack of old straw bales or they would have gotten gotten around her and got it for sure.

I have a few simmentalcows too and they can sure act like tigers when their calves are just born.
Thats the only thing I hate about them. I like their lots of milk = always a heavy weanling.
Even the crossbreds give a lot of milk.
When my dog comes near the calves he is not sure of his live and he knows that.

Simms are very good cattle, I like them alot. I also like several other breeds but the best is usually a cross that's fits your enviroment. However we can't have crosses without breeders growing fullbloods. We also need genetic diversity in the nationwide herd. I wish everyone would stop putting down everything but what they raise.
