Why charolais for terminal cross

Chars seem to be the choice for terminal cross. I'm wondering what they have over Lims and Simmentals? Is the heterosis better for some reason?

well they have better butts than simmental and they have bigger bones than limousins. of course they also have bigger heads...lol. but they also really make a uniform looking calf crop and those yellows and grays are highly sought after and easy to recognize.

Actually Chars have lost some marketshare up in my neck of the woods to Fleckvieh Simmentals-I think mostly because the SimmX heifers make a bit better female on average than the Chars. We ran Charolais ourselves for 35 years and had pretty good luck.

I'd bet that fleck bull on the begginer board would make a good terminal or maternal sire. he's got it. dont see why he couldnt add the pounds and uniformity to a group of calves. like too have used a bull like that a few years ago on some brahman momas.

I know for me the larger bone would be a disadvantage, you will get a higher total dreesing percentage if you have a finer bonned animal with muscle. Thats what Limousin used to bring to the table. It is very hard to find heavy muscled Limmys anymore. That I think is the reason that many commercial cattlemen use Chars, muscle and a solid color. Simmys have a bad habit of having spots, and in my part of the world that will get you hammered with buyers

that used to be the case with the old big frame rangy simmental. the simm folks have done a good job lately less frame more muscle mass and less or no spots at all ... them spots meant to the buyers we gonna have a big mouth to feed and and no meat in return

i thought his birth weight would be high. :( and it would plumb scare me too use him on most of these cattle around here and the direction im going now. but i would'nt be afraid to use him years ago on my mature brahman cows. ive used heavy birth weight simm bulls on brahman heifers then with no calving problems. friend would tell me they could'nt have em with out trouble but you should have seen their face when they spit out the little bag of bones

do you think after he goes to work and pull's some of that excess off.. he would move out ok? ive seen alot of fatt'in or over conditioned sale bull's that move like their uncomfortable or stiff

I'd have to look at him and see just what is tender about his feet, pasturn, hock, hip, etc. By the way he's standing I'd guess him to have a little smaller foot than what he'd like to have.

I've been to where they keep the bulls, and the pens are I guess what you'd call small: about 50' x 150', and this pic would've been taken around mid winter, from the looks of other pics they posted of some other bulls. So that and the size of the pen might have something to do with it. :idea:

I sure wish I knew who he went to, just to see what he looks like now.
