Our ponds have not been this low since 2011. Some have already gone dry, so the guys are taking this time to dig them out deeper than ever. Getting really nervous, if we have a dry winter and go into spring dry. Well, if we have a dry winter, we wont have any water left so what do you do then?
 
I'm beyond worrying, it's been proven time and again it doesn't help. At our homeplace we've had less than 8" of rain for the year. And 3.5" of that came in a 12 hour period.

We seldom get a dry winter, but I remember one year back in the early 90's we had one. I had to steam barns to evenget my tobacco crop stripped. The upside was no mud to drag through.
 
I don't worry about water for the cattle--plenty of that, and had plenty even in 2011, but for the forage is a different story. I put out my first hay already.

We have, had, too much hay....but really glad we have it. Its not too much now. Just starting to feed hay to some of the herds..

Got a couple of days of good soft soaking rain last week. Never really heard how much but probably not over 2 inches. Very little run off as most just soaked in quickly. We're ok for now.
 
You didn't get any rain this past 10 days? We got 5 inches in a Austin. Heck it rained all day 2 days. We got enough in Brownwood that one of the ponds over flowed.
 
Saw a ticker run across the bottom of the news my wife was watching saying lanina was here and a 55% chance it would last through the winter....but that would be a weather forecast so don't bet on it.

We've got over 3 inches the past 10 days....doing fine.

Looked out the window at daybreak the other day....looked like my unplanted oat field was full of hogs....turned out to be fireant mounds. They building them tall like they did last year.
 
I had been talking to a lady in Dewey Rose, GA about a bred heifer. I knew things were bad there but when she sent me pics of the girl I realized just how bad it really was. Turned out the she wasn't bred after all so I won't be seeing for myself. We were just bless with 3"+ and things look better here.
 
We have 10 more days of no rain forecast. Each time its rained,its been under 1/2 inch per rain since August. We went from full ponds to low or dry. We do have some deep ponds that if we have to, we can pool all the cows in one pasture like we did in 2011...but although that pond wasnt dry, i had to pump water twice a day into a big stock tank.
