Ok.... Now that I got your attention: l :lol2: :lol2:

I think black hides were getting such a high premium due to the Angus Marketing Machine, which is great. But what I wonder is if those of us that are focusing on the black hide are we behind the curve. As a newbie, over the past few years as I prepared for the day I took over my family's land, I would see & read reports focusing on developing a cow that's more efficient on grass, regardless of color.. I guess what I'm asking are we looking forward enough into the future? Are we trying to develop or manage the wrong genes? Will a day come when hide color want matter? If feed, hay, fuel & fertilizer for improved grasses are pricing the small to mid-size cattleman out the business, should we look at creating more profit by improving our herd in other ways?

Not necessarily..I don't care what a person raises. Each operation is different.. I like raising cattle cause I like being outside, whether its at my Corp Sales job or hanging out with my uncle before he past away. But I do want to make money & I am not going to forget for me this a business, that I'm trying to build for successful future.

I don't want to make this thread about breeds and all of that. Because from what I seen on & read that goes NO WHERE!!!..

I read the article about the Hereford breeding program at Sul Ross & then I read the thread/article about using the Black Char. You combine that with whats going on with the Black Hereford.. IT seems every other cattleman's solution to improving his/her herd & profit is adding black. So I'm asking if high $$$$$ research is being conducted to improve cattle/profit in other ways besides color, should'nt the small producer being thinking along the same lines. OR risk being behind the 8ball in 10years..

I'm just tyring to discuss cattle BUSINESS, not get into a playground name calling contest on the internet about who's TOYS are the coolest..

Good cattle will bring good money regardless of color. I agree that many things are more important than color, but I do love Angus (notice I didn`t say black?) and Angus cross cows.

Well, I could list all the black worshippers here if you like but it is a waste of time. They are already not only converted but have a glazed eye when it comes to discussing any other breed.

I could tell you about CAB but that is now nothing more than false advertising based pretty much upon colour and excludes the red angus which has only the colour gene as a difference.

I could tell you how the vast majority of people in the US of A believe there is no beef but black angus beef.

And the beat goes on.

Personally I give a rats azz - but the breeders, growers, sellers, buyers and consumers seem to care and they have bought into the "black is not only beautiful but it is THE ONE" hook line and sinker - bypassing quality animals in many cases in order to promote a poorer quality animal because of its colour.

In my opinion, it is all a very well marketed hoax and it is making a select few quite rich!

Best to all

I went against the grain & my uncles suggestions.. I have longhorns crossed/A.I.ed to a Homozygous-polled Char....my LH's have little or no flash (color) almost solid and have full bodies.. I feed on 2 improved pasture, but mostly native grass, hay & salt/mineral blocks. This spring will be my 1st calving season. My mentor uses this same cross, but his Terminal Polled-Char is not Homozygous so his calves are in most cases a nice red or tan with little or no white/spots but have horns. He does real well at the barn in East Texas after dehorning.. In the future I would like to switch 1 "improved pasture" back to Native grass.

But I'm lucky thanks to my grand parents.. I don't have a mortgage or have to lease land, I just have to pay taxes on ag exempt land, so my over head is very low.

If the CAB is a "Grand Hustle", then it will eventually come to an end like most hustles do. If the consumers are becoming more educated on food production & grain fed beef is slowly becoming taboo. Are producers prepared for it & what are we doing.

People say follow the cash, so what is saying if more studies are being funded to show the benefits of grass fed/ grass finished beef & efforts are mad to improve breeds ability to finish on grass.. like say the Herefords & Low Line Angus

I'm prepared for what ever market change. They want red white face, i'll get me a fleck to breed my cows. They want white, got that covered too. They want grass eaters, well simmies do pretty good on it but I guess I could throw in some hereford to bump it up.

Feel sorry for you dedicated breeders you might end up missing the boat when the market changes again. :cowboy:

Breed or color those not matter. what else should we being doing to improve profit margin, besides color...

using cows that work in your enviroment, and bulls to fit the market....

This is the important piece in this whole conversation. Whether you agree with the "black hype" or not it is still the market. And the market, is the market, is the market, is the market. I personally find the genetic packages in angus more appealing than other breeds. I have some red angus cows but prefer black. If I could have 100% red cows that is the way I would have it but we are too far away to make that happen and I don't really want to have to buy replacements to turn the herd, pretty satisfied with the path I am on.

So you wouldn't raise "black" even if you knew your market would pay you more for it?

I am not BEZ but not only no but HE!! no.

I don't really understand this constant debate. If you have a commercial herd, you're just a bull-switch away from providing the buyers what they want and maximizing your $. If your not willing to adjust to what will pay the most, you are a fool.

Or already getting a premium for your replacement females and freezer beef. Marketing for what you have.

So no not a fool.
