Ours tend to graze east and west, that's the easiest traveling without having to climb up or down hills.

Here in Montana, our cattle tend to graze with their heads pointed down.... :D
Hmmmm... Maybe that would be East... Since everyone knows that if you were to dig in the direction that their noses are pointed, you would end up in China... That's east of us I believe... :D

Sounds like something that came out of the south end of a bull to me. I have a ritchie fountain that is set up by accident on a near perfect north/south orientation. I almost never see a cow standing on the south side facing north to drink.

Well in the Winter time when there is a blue norther blowin' their tails are facing North, at least mine do. Maybe I got me some edumacated cows.

Cattle are amazing. They really are checking the fence, and that seems intelligent. But what they want is to go stand in the middle of the interstate.

Those type cattle are the true money-makers. Not for you of course but for the fool travelling 90 mph that hits em. (For those of you out west I am envious of your range laws. Unfortunately here we have some folks that are upset that 911 will not connect them to an attorney)

If their were only 8100 cattle on those six continents I would be impressed with their findings. Sounds like a waste of tax dollars and usefull time to me.

I eat facing south sometimes, other times I face west. I wonder what that means?

Other than facing west I'm eating at the table and facing south means I'm eating at my desk. :)

The study sent Tina Hinchley, who with her husband Duane operates a dairy farm in Cambridge, Wis., to take a new look at an aerial photo taken of their farm a few years ago.

"The cows that were in the pasture were all over the place ... about two-thirds were north-south," Hinchley said.

Two-thirds is close to what the researchers found in their look at 8,510 cattle in 308 pastures. In the study, 60% to 70% of cattle were oriented north-south, which Begall termed a "highly significant deviation from random distribution."

Hinchley stressed that one factor that must be considered is cow comfort.

"They don't like to get hot. Their body temperature is 102, and they are wearing black leather jackets, literally! If turning north-south would keep them cooler, they would stand that way."

If standing north-south keeps them cooler, the opposite should keep them warmer, north-south. I believe most will find them standing butt to the north in a winter wind. Shouldn't they be east-west if they are trying to get warmer. :?

Just after hearing that yesterday I passed a couple of our neighbors cows and they were laying down facing south.
Passed the steers in our uncles place and they were facing east. I guess they didn't hear about this new study. :lol2: :lol2:

Interestingly we all know this is bunk but when presented with "scientific" articles that we know little about, we swallow hook , line and sinker.

I see that they say if you sleep north to south that you have more REM sleep. I think that means you dream more. Maybe thats why everyone is buried with their feet pointing east so they will sleep better.

Dang it Fred... Now they will want to do a study on which way cattle face while they are asleep....
BTW, I always thought, when buried, feet were pointed up so that the the body would rest on its back.... :D
Or was it the toes.... I am soooo confused now :cry2:

Cattle sleep?? I think mine eat 24-7. I just find it curious that graves are always laid out east to west with the head west and the feet east. I don't know if there is a reason.

Must be a regional thing. The old graveyard next door is laid out north and south. Never noticed how others are set up

Fascinating. No more study should be done on this curious phenomenon. Some things should forever be a mystery.
