We've been tossing about the idea of buying another baler, we have a NH 282 self powered, just rebuild the engine on it and it runs great (Wisconsin V461D, much bigger than original at about 60HP), and updated the carb to a Mikuni from a Yamaha 400 bike, runs really smooth with it, and electronic ignition from a Toyota car.. I'm just working out off a really stale batch of fuel (darned ethanol!) and it sputters a bit when it's cold because of it, but I had it tuned on the good stuff... We figure this baler has made about 750,000 bales since we know it's life history.. they ceramic twine eyelets had grooves so deep the twine was getting cut on it, so we had to rotate it.. we had to weld a piece of planer blade on the twine tensioner too. It has seen better days for sure, but I'm familiar with it, and there's not too much I can't fix on it..
Anyhow, for when we go to auctions, What are the good model numbers? I know some had cheap pressed bale chambers that would crack, newer ones had lighter duty knotters... We're also on the fence about the bale size... for my own animals, I definitely want a 16x18 bale, but for selling, no one gives a darn that they're getting more hay in a bale, so perhaps a 14x16 would be better for selling..
