which magnet to buy?

Hi everybody--forum newbie here! I'm Dottie Love. I live right South of Dallas and have a small herd (20) of Miniature Zebu Cattle on 25 acres. I kinda grew up in the country, but have only had cows since 2001. I'm a founding VP of the American Miniature Zebu Association. Next week (September 25-28, 2008, I'll be showing at the State Fair of TX--we're expecting about 80 entries. If you're in the neighborhood, please stop by! Right this minute I have an issue I need advice on. I have a 13-year-old cow that may be dying of Hardware Disease. I say "may" 'cuz I don't want to give up hope, but she has all the worst symptoms except infection--brisket/navel/udder edema (not huge), lethargy, off feed, diarrhea, and a "jumping" jugular vein. The vet diagnosed her and placed a magnet yesterday. Here's my question: any recommendations for brand/style of magnet? I'm gonna buy about 50 for our members at the Fair, and a balling gun. I notice the diameters vary--our cattle are little (median size 36")--I don't want to choke 'em. I'm planning to offer them for sale to our members for 18 mos. and up animals, and they can use my balling gun. Any advice? Thanks in advance--Dottie

the best thing todo is talk to your vet an see what size magnet he recommends.

I asked him when he came out w/ the magnet if it was a full-size cow magnet; it was. Looking at the end that was sticking out the balling gun it was prob. an Alnico magnet. I didn't ask what brand--didn't know there's so many different ones-they're from $1-$5, and of course each manufacturer says theirs are the best--Dottie
