Hi everyone! Just wanted to intro myself and tell you what a great site. Lots of info on it and I dont have clue what any of it means! LOL! My wife and I have two kids a boy (9) and a girl (12). Both are showing livestock in our county fair and both did great in their showmanship however not so hot on judging of the actual calfs. By the way both are showing beeef feeders. So this is my perdicament(sp) I would like to get them both decent angus or cross spring calves for next year but where do I start? I dont want too break the bank, but still want to be able to compete. as for now I am looking at it as a finacial view, Options: 1 Just buy a good spring calf 2.buy any cow and ai her 3. buy a cow and have her be a serogent of a show cow and bull? I have no Idea what the costs would be. So If I could get a little help on this I sure would appreciate it. I guess what I am asking is what can I expect to pay for each option. Hope this makes sense to you! Thanks P.S This is probable a stupid question but what exactly is meant by club calve sale?
 
If you are looking at a strictly financial point of view, I would expect to spend about $2000 per calf. For show calves that isn't that much, but you should be able to compete. Get heifers so you can A.I. them in the spring. Until you have several good cows you will have to spend money on buying show calves. However, buying heifers and A.I. them, you will set yourself up to calf out your own show stock. If you have other plain jane calves, approach a show calf producer about trading two calves for a show calf. If I was approached with that deal I would take it in a heartbeat. Good luck!
 
You got some options here now be aware you get what you pay for but In your situation this is what I would do

1) Shop around, Shop around, Shop around some more, you can buy a decent clubby heifer for say $1000 - 1500 now your probably not gonna get a Grand Champ out of this animal but you could win a class or two and have some fun then I would sell one at the fair to get some $$$ and buy a better animal or keep both and AI to the best bull of your choice.

2) Go to a local Auction yard ask the Auctioner for some help in buying some decent cows that you could get a calf or two out of AI them once or twice or more then sell them and go from there

3) go to local purebred breeders tell them you situation and most breeders will work with but dont expect a free calf or something but maybe you could work something out like you raise and show two of there calves and in return get a calf out of the deal or get a discount on some calves or a better deal just call, visit breeders in your area and go from there

club calf sale - is a sale that has club calves in it
club calves can be a breed or mixture of breeds for the use of the showring tend to have lots of hair, clean fronted and so on I may be missing somethings but this should help

i got my market steer for this year at market price last october. and i've been told by various guys that i actually have a chance with him...so maybe price isnt everything. but in most cases it is. around here to actually compete you're probably gonna start aound 2,000 dollars, if you go to a breeder. get them on good feed, that helps too.
 
Shop around is the best advice, I agree. Not only do you not want to break the bank, but you want to teach your kids that hard work will pay off & that you don't just start at the top. Good for you. I wish more parents would take the same approach at the local level.
You may want to consider if you want to get into a situation of having cattle all year round. If you purchase heifers of cows & breed them, that's the situation you will be in. However you will be showing your own stock. It's a give and take. I couldn't imagine our life any other way, but you are a bit strapped to the property, and it does get time consuming. Just something to think about.
Another option to think about is to check with some registered breeders in your area as mentioned. Many will have quality calves that are available for a very reasonable price. I know around here you can get a nice calf for around $1000. Many of the regsisterd breeders have ultrasound data on the carcasses or their animals to help determine the quality of the meat.
Club calf sales are great, but sometimes prices go high due to the "auction effect". I would suggest you & the family at least go to a few & watch & check out the calves. You may even get in touch with consignors there for the following years. Many sales will also have seminars on the same day & are a great learning experience, and free. Good Luck to you.
