On a small cow calf operation that is set up for forage and hay for cows to get most/all of their nutrition, how and when should cows be supplemented with grain? What percent protein should be used and can sweet feed be used. would silage be a suitable supplement?

I don't supplement cows other than to catch them as long as the hay is good enough.

In snow or if the temps are well below freezing and it's raining is the only time we feed. The trees the cows have for shelter doesn;t really do much to protect them from the severe weather.
Other then that, 45 days at weaning and when we need to bring them up to the catch pen for AI or working them. Contrary to common thought, they won;t forget and don't need to be grained to remind them of what it's all about.

If your hay is decent, then grain shouldn't be to necessary. If a cow/calf operation was going to feed grain, around here the time to that would be late February, and the month of march. It fights off the affects of old man winter, and brings them in to spring a little nicer.

Thanks guys. Would the fact that im trying to AI change anyones opinion?
As long as they are a BCS of at least 5.5 I wouldn;t bother with grain
