When is my cow in heat?

Okay here's the Stitch. I have a Hereford heifer. I bought her at auction and estimated her age at 6 months, my Vet agreed with that. Therefore I have kept her on a feeding regimene so she would gain the ight amount of weight so that by 1 year she would be on her way to her first heat. On 1/28/10 she had a bloody discharge. SO the part I am confused about is how long before the discharge is the heat period, and after the discharge when does it come back? I don't have a bull handy to key me into that, and my goal is to have her artificially inseminated with Wagyu for a Hereford/Wagyu cross. :?:

What I would recommend is lining up the insemination technician and have him assist you in putting her on a synchrony program and breed her by appointment.

We are breeding six tomorrow at 2 PM.

The bleeding is about 3 days after the ovulation. She'll be back in (usually) from 17 - 23 days after that but more likely closer to 20-21 days. If you don;t have a steer or another cow/heifer with her, watch her for behaviour changes and avaginal discharge.

Thank you ALL for such great information and tips!! I have contacted a local Artfl Insemination specialist!! I am very happy I found this web site and joined up! As a child we had a herd of herefords but of course they were on a large ranch and never had to worry about what came natural! Thank you all again.
