The Food stamp program, which is part of the US Department of Agriculture has distributed a record number and free lunch programs.
Meanwhile the same department wants us not to feed the bears because they will get dependent on handouts and will not fend for food on their own.
Pretty ironic,don't ya think?

The have nots want what the haves have, but the haves don't want anybody else to have anything.

Well speaking as a "used to have" who wants to be a "have" I am working hard to make sure that I will someday have again and while on the way to having I want any and all hard working folks around me to have as much as their work ethic and skills will allow for.

I don't know too many "haves" who begrudge anyone improving their lot in life.

I do see a lot of "have nots" who have became too dependent on Uncle Sam.

My 2 cents...

every year when we register our daughter for school there is a form that has to be filled out to see if we qualify for "free lunches"
the first year we told them no need to fill it out we can afford to pay for her lunches but they insisted in knowing our income, being a small town i really didn't care to share with everyone.
they do feed every kid breakfast every morning no matter what.
sometimes she eats breakfast at home when they serve something she doesn't like and sometimes eats at home and school. :D
i really don't have a problem feeding anyone especially a kid.
it's not like it's the kids fault.
just the other day i paid a couple guys to rake leaves and bought them a pizza for lunch and really didn't need the leaves raked, but they were willing to work.
i think instead of foodstamps or lonestar card or whatever they should hand out rice, beans, milk, eggs and etc.

I hire and fire about 40 dead beats a year . Most don't want to work and can't pass a drug test . I don't feel like I should have to feed the world just because of their supposed bad luck or lack of education . I grew up poor and worked very hard . I have now decided to pay everything off and quit working in the next 5 years except for odd jobs and baling hay . I'm gonna do a lot of horse tradin and report as little as possible . I might even sign up for food stamps and gubment help . If you can't beat em join em !!!

I would like to see the requirements tightened up to get food assistance in the first place, and some random audits to kick people off if they are buying expensive, luxury type foods. I saw a receipt once that had been scanned and posted online, somebody bought steak, lobster and soda pop with a food stamp card. That is someone who doesn't need them. Finding and ferreting out those people without hurting the ones that are just in a bad spot temporarily and not abusing their benefits, that is the challenge.

I bout can't stand to go to the store at the first of the month. It makes me sick seeing all of these young and able people on food stamps loading up their buggies with all name brand stuff and expensive cuts of meat etc. and not a care in the world living off of our hard earned tax dollars. I've seen em use Food Stamps for their food and get out a big wad of cash for their beer and cigarettes. I know there are hard-working, honest people that run on hard times, and I want to help those people, but I'd say a majority of the people that get assistance don't have any plans of ever getting off of it and helping themselves. I think if they had to pass a drug test to get assistance, that would weed out of lot of folks that are mooching off the system.

Cross7, the reason they made you fill out the form was so they could count you as a person requesting help but was refused help. This helps them get more funding.

Drug addicts are considered handicapped. I'm sure known of you would advocate not helping a handicapped person with your tax money now would you?

JSCattle, I have given some serious consideration to using the same business model. I spent three hours this week dealing with the IRS because they don't have a 941 form I mailed them last year and again three months ago and now they need it again after Juanita or whatever her name was told me it was fixed. Money has been paid but they want their silly form but thanks to affirmative action someone keeps losing the dam thing and they keep pestering me. A fella once told me that nonreported income isn't taxable and it doesn't require filling out tons of paperwork for them to lose and fine you over so there may just be something to your idea.

You asked for my thoughts:

I happen to think that the free breakfast and lunch programs at school are a good thing. Many kids through no fault of their own don't get good nutrition at home. I actually think free breakfast is more important if they can get the kids in there in time. Having a good breakfast helps them through the school day, learning and in the end probably has a very good return on the investment. Hard to get an education to get a good job if your stomach is empty every morning in school.

I also think it is a good idea not to feed the bears.

This is what was asked in the original post i believe. Hard to believe folks will stretch those two things into a political statement.

Yes we all have food stamp and welfare horror stories. Always have been and always will be... you do the best you can to take care of the kids. In both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Jim posted so I don't need to...

Breakfast at school must be one of the most important things a welfare society can do, something I'd be willing to pay tax towards if it was done here. I've taught kids who were intractable and I knew perfectly well it was because they hadn't eaten that day... it only took a couple of cookies or something similar worked into the theme of the lesson and suddenly the whole class - not just half of them - would be alert and eager to learn. Trying to function with low blood sugar is no good for anyone.

That is not at all the same as the situation where everyone is expected to apply for what they can get whether they need it or not, and once you get into a scenario where service providers charge extra because they know the governement is holding the chequebook, the original intention has failed.
I looked at a room in a tumble-down little house once that the owner wanted 55 pound a week for rent and told me when I said that there were better and cheaper rooms around that my 'housing benefit' would pay it. I told him as a student I wasn't eligible for any such benefit and walked out. He was asking close on double what the room was worth. This happens over and over, so the people who benefit from the hand-out are those who are already 'haves'.

Negative. The haves want to be left alone.

The old saying goes if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish he can be fed for a lifetime.

Calman's point is we are handing out all the fish we catch. Some of us don't HAVE that many fish to begin with so we fish like crazy to get a few, only to have them taken away.

i've said that for years.
there are lots of people in the world that are not college/white collar jobs candidates(i'm one of them)
we should have vocational programs in school so when these kids get out of high school that have some direction on how to earn a living for themselves.

cross_7 We do, all the kids need to go into the service. At least they would know how to dress themselves. No more baggy pants with their underwear showing.

Untill you change their mindset you can build a school on every corner, equip it with the best faculty and facilities in the world and all they'll do is continue to eat the covers off the books.
