Hello everyone!
I am new to this enternet stuff but would like to throw something out and see what different thoughts yall might have.
I am going 8-30-07 to look at a stud bull prospect from Meyer734/ Cigar with intintions of breeding him with my young Charolai cows.
The calves that I do not plan on feedering for myself I plan on saling.
Would this match be considered as also a good possible demand for State and local show quality. I beleive that it would be more profitable if so.
I am sure that someone would buy for show but I guess what I am asking would this be a great combo for show?
Thanks for any comments K&G cattle
My nephew will be showing my Angus / black baldy cross steer
at Dallas State fair on Oct. 5th. I wish Jaccob Good Luck!!

Just my personal opinion but to me simmentals are just big red and white holsteins. I would be more inclined to bred them to older more mature cattle since they often throw some huge calves. Get your calf puller ready.

that use to be the case with them ol simmental's the breeders have done a lot of cleaning up lately

people up here want the fleckvieh simmentals crossed with charolais because they produce great mothers and and feeder calves.

Just for the record I need to add that my Simmental bull is some what of a mutt. He gets his Genetics from Myer 734 Sim. and his Main from Cigar + Angus thrown in there on both sides.
So basicly short black coat white faced with plenty of muscle and slite hump on top of the neck. He is 15 months now. and is a father to be, already to my Angus black baldy cow she's 3 years old and 40+ days pregnant by him. I can't wait to see what this one will look like. He has the mother (Black Baldy) of this cow scratched up from working on her as well. So he seems to be a good bull so far.
Nice chatting Talk Latter!

Hello!!??? How about getting into the past few decades of American bred Simmentals??? Even back in the old days, they were never lacking muscle. They are now considered as easy calving as Angus (within 1%) and easier than Herefords.
Normally, I would not recommend Simm on Char as being the best cross. They are both continental breeds, and you are better crossing a british w/ cont.
But, you have a crossbred bull, probably moderate in size and he should work just fine on your cattle (probably would work on most any breed) - IF - he is moderate in size.

??????????

Simmentals aren't red and white any more, especially the type he brought up at the start of this thread.

Fleckvieh Simmental cattle are about as far from a Holstein as you can get.[/quote]

Ditto

In fact I'm picking up some Sem heifers next week to put with my RA's and see how a F1 SemAngus path works out. Since I'm going both ways does any one recommend a calving ease Sem bull for AI on a few of my 4-7 year old RA's?

You apparently were on vacation in the last 10 years. Sims look like thick Angus now.

We used Autobahn form select sires and were really tickled with the calves. We ate on and he was the tenderest meat we've ever had.

Wow - that was a surprise. I went to this site & my bull is listed (Simme Valley Macho As U) ???? I have never even heard of this company! They must coop with Genetic Horizons SEK or Cattle Visions, because they are the only other ones with a semen supply (other than my stud & ourselves).

Texasbred - here's a pic of typical Simmentals:

That must be a shock.

Bullseye Genetics also carries Macho in their vast Simmental catalog.

I emailed the first site & asked about it. I sure don't mind the free advertising! :D But, if someone ordered semen - they don't have any - unless, as I mentioined, they must be coop-ing with SEK or CV.

Just about all of the Semen sellers will "wholesale out" semen.

Aint nothing wrong with breeding continental to continental. The best calves I ever had were out of Registered Gelbvieh cows and a Registered Salers bull. Small at birth, weaned heavy, and high yearling weights. Made some danged fine mama cows to Wink.

You may have indeed had an acceptable experiance do to either a specific case of complementary genetics (due to phenotypical selection), or maybe even luck. But that does not disprove heterosis. Would you agree, or do you just not believe in heterosis?

You would still get heterosis from a Gelbvieh / Salers cross; just like people who cross two English breeds.

Its a matter of degree though isn't it. Its not like a switch that is either on or off. So the more different the genetic base the more heterosis is expressed.
