Whats everyone cooking this year. Im smoking a turkey and two fresh hams in applewood. One ham is to keep here at the house since we're going to relatives.
Lets here what youre doing

SIL is hosting this year so I won't be doing any cooking other than the escalloped Oysters.
We are providing the main course though.

We're having a smoked turkey with a honey cured ham with cheese potato casserole, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, pecan pie, pumpkin loaf and whatever else the crowd comes up with.

I'm pretty much taking this year off. Going to the farm today to eat at my brothers. Sounds like turkey and rib eyes are on the menu. Thursday I'm the assistant to my wife while she creates the T-Day meal and she really hasn't discussed it with me. It's all good with me.

Ive never smoked a turkey. Can it still be done at 220-250 and be safe or should it be done at a higher temp. Internet gives conflicting infov

Thats what i hear. I think ill do em at 250 instead. 12 lb birds and 2 10 lb split hams

My menu consistes of putting up with a bunch of people that I don;t really care to hear from calling to wish me happy thanksgiving

At least they're calling and not dropping by. Hanging up is always easier than running them off.
Ignoring the phone works even better

The weather here is getting too iffy to travel over the river and through the woods to another family member's home; it's just going to be the LOML and me here. There's a whole turkey, a couple turkey breasts, ham and lots of beef in the freezer, but I'm just not feeling inclined to make a big mess. Actually, this year, I'm inclined to make RESERVATIONS!

My mother still does Thanksgiving dinner, she loves to host it and is still perfectly able. She is over-achieving (as usual) this year with turkey, ham AND brisket. Mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, dressing, sweet potatoes, and other side dishes. I know there will be pumpkin pie, cheesecake and one other dessert. I have been requested to bring layered bean dip to graze on before hand. Easiest thing in the world to make and everybody loves it. Also, mother requested I make an "old school" jello salad she likes that is creamy and savory as much as sweet and has horseradish in it.

MO_cows, any chance of sharing the "old school" jello salad recipe? We're going to my SIL's and after last year's 14+ side dishes at that gathering, I resolved not to take anything this year, but now I'm beginning to feel guilty about that.

OMG, what's happening to me? I'm actually starting to ask people for recipes?

When reading through all your plans for Thanksgiving it seems that everything 'usually' goes off without a hitch, sort of as planned and perfect. But..... has anyone ever had a disaster, like the dog stealing the turkey off the table or the pudding flopping or something?

I don't know but it will be good, can't ever remember a bad Thanksgiving dinner. Always seems like the best hunting day of the year also.

Not Thanksgiving, but Christmas Alison. I was still in high school and went with my parents to my sisters and her BF's for Christmas , where we were joined by his parents. The turkey was taken out of the oven to sit before carving . I don't know why no one was watching their dog Conan, but he pulled the huge turkey down and him and Tia (dads blue healer) demolished it. Tia had a very bad reaction and had to spend the night in the vet hospital because her neck swelled up so bad she couldn't breathe. It wasn't a very good Christmas after that, but Tia did make a full recovery . Thank goodness as my dad loved that dog.

The time I had Thanksgiving dinner at a Waffle House in Charlotte, North Carolina and then when I finished and got ready to leave remembered I didn't have any money.

Maybe not what you are asking but memorable all the same. My X SIL has her doctorate in nutrition and has written three college text books on the subject and is viewed highly in the field with her bland foods of health. Anyhow, I ended up at her house one Thanksgiving and she asked me to carve the remains of what she claimed was a turkey but it looked more like a dehydrated buzzard. To my surprise she had cooked it with the dam bag of giblets and innards still inside the bird - still in the bag! :lol2: :lol2: Boy did she catch so grief from her brothers while I quietly chuckled under my breath. Apparantly to have a docotorate in nutrition you are not required to know how to cook. I do have to give her credit though the can of beans she warmed up tasted ... well.... like any other can of beans warmed up.
