heres the deal my nephew an his buddy bought 4 reg beefmaster heifers.they want to breed them next spring,so we are thinking AI or buy another reg bull.neither of the boys know how to AI an we dont have a semen jugg.an with 4 heifers the semen will cost from $1000 to $2000 plus the cost of a tech.ive got the bull they can breed the heifers to no prob.but we are thinking it be best for his buddy to buy a reg bull since the semen cost is so high,an he has an old bull he needs to replace.the new bull could cost $3000 or more.what are yalls thoughts.

Just call an AI tech tell him what breed and your budget and he will take care of all or part of it. You or they may be able to so the set up( shots, cidr)
And just have the tech bring your semen and semen in one trip
I'd bet it wouldn't cost you much over 100.00 per heifer

we are looking at the top bulls in the beefmaster breed.so thats why the the semen is anywhere from $100 to $200 a straw plus certs if they require certs.now if i had a jugg i could get the boys semen for less than $1000.an fill the tank full to boot.

theres no more AI techs around here.all the dairymen did the AIing themselves.we have vets that AI an i still have to price the semen.

the AI companies dont handle much if any beefmaster semen.as it is usually the owners of the bulls that have them collected an promote the bulls an sell semen.

the semen that we are looking at cost $100 to $200 a straw.nephew has been talking to some breeders an they dont AI any of of their heifers.this is there deal im here to clean up their messes.plus we have 6 months or longer before we breed the heifers.

What I would do is pretty simple if the semen is that high. I would breed them to something else that doesn;t think their bulls squirt platinum or sell the heifers and get another breed.

bigbull i don't know where your at but i know a guy that ai's 200 head of his own and helps the semen rep(not sure who)
he is in gainesville tx if that close to you i'll pass his name along to you.

Bovine Elite College Station Texas. They are good people and i am sure they could help you out. I guess i would pick a few of them less than the best bulls and see how the calves turned out.

Bovine elite has beefmaster andI'd bet that genex has some floatin around from their custom collection deal.
There's no way I'd pay what you're looking at paying for semen. ESPECIALLY if it's from a breeder who is self promoting the bull...
Also, you're kind of looking at it like it's all or nothing. In between spending hundreds of dollars a straw on semen or thousands on any old bull with a set of papers there are alot of good quality mid priced AI bulls that will be beter than the bull that you'd be buying in the flesh.

the bull rout is prolly the way we will go.as i said im not in this deal.if the boys want to go with AI then thats their choice.an we wont use another breed of bull because that will set us back 2yrs.the boys need a herd bull so the bull is the best way to go.
