What would it be like to do nothing?

In a thread entitled “Buzzards”. Hurley ask, “What would it be like to have nothing to do.” That question was spawned as a result of the tribulations he experienced as a result of buzzards on a young cow.

I will be 64 in August. I have some genes for longevity but more likely, "if a tree don't fall on me I'll live till I die." The question I have pondered: “Is there something else I should be doing with the short and precious time I have left?” I ask myself that question as I parted working for the other "man". I thought about doing "something of value". But I could not conjure up any great and noble task that was more than "simply living out my mortal life". It is what every other mortal human has done since our species ascended. I have landed on 80 acres of hillside, raising cattle and spending days with my dog, Blue.

Oh, Robert Frost had it right on the “paths not taken”. If I could clone myself there is a woman I would like to be with, I miss her every day. If I could clone myself, I would like to study anthropology. Etc. etc. etc.

Instead, I am a common law husband to my cows. I help them watch over their babies. I stand behind my cows and scratch around their anus and vulva. I don't give a cupful of cold water what anyone thinks. I will name them whatever I wish. I will treat them like pets. For my situation, I will spend money and not earn it because I am just taking care of cows.

I experience low times, like you do Hurley. I am sad when my calves go to market. I feel disappointed selling an animal that has served me. Sometimes I feel like a traitor. Like I deceive them. I am sad when a cow is ill. I worry when the ice, rain and cold are mean to them.

Have I chosen wisely? Does it matter? “In the end, we are all just dead men.” Proximo. All a man can do is use the time he is given. I would not even consider having nothing to do!

Why would you want to do nothing?? I enjoy having something to do, can you imagine how it would feel not being able to get up and do something. Inyati you have it made, and you know it. We are still able to what we want for the most part in this country. That is as long as you can afford it. Every year we lose a little more freedom to do as we please. And we pay for it in the wallet, so those that want to do nothing can.

I don't know what it would be like doing nothing. I retired a couple of years ago and thought about what I was going to do with myself. As it turned out my make up would not allow me to do nothing. I have many (many) things to keep me busy and I often wonder how I had time to work for someone else. Here's just a partial list of projects I have in the works:

Helping my Son restore the wife's family house built in 1904. This could be a full time occupation.
Building a pantry system for my house.
Keeping my tractors running.
Planting and maintaing an orchard including blueberry's that are not supposed to grow in my area.
Keeping up with the fence work.
Fishing (ahh, this COULD be my full time work).
Teaching the kids in my life about hunting, fishing, work ethic, driving a car and life in general. Another full time job.
Developing a couple of ideas for patents.

Thing about it is I don't think I'm going to live long enough to finish anything. I figure I only have three or four years left and then someone else can decide if the things I've started are worth finishing. If you need something to do come on down. I am absolutely sure I can put you to work for a few months.

I'm a new empty nester after raising 4 kids. Got them all through college with no dept. They are all employed and have their own homes near us and are just now starting to have kids. Last time when it was just my husband and I, we were dirt poor and had nothing. I am looking forward to my senior years, totally looking forward to it. Even though i'll never see a day when i can retire, i dont want to retire. If i could live my life like it is today till the end i'll be happy. I can see myself at 85 still riding around on my 4wheeler checking cows. Our son will eventually take the business over, but until then i'll be a cowgirl.
BTW, i feel the same about our cows, probably why some of them that dont fit the bill are still here. But, when we sell, i get over it and move on.

Today might be that day. I got up this morning and said "I don't plan to do a dam thing today".....I am almost finished. :lol2: :lol2:

Yesterday I woke up and had nothing to do all day. By bedtime I only had half of it done.

It's damned boring.
I have a little housework to do,a few flowers in pots, books to read and some friends to chat with online. Drs to visit, tests to deal with.. I'd love to have a few cows/dogs/horses to watch and take care of,but that part of my life is over..

My question goes deeper and it haunts me on a regular basis. I have always felt like I we here on earth for a special reason and it appears to me that my time to achieve that goal is getting shorter.

The thing of it is,you may not know what you did that changed the world.. The "Butterfly Effect" works for good too :)

Good luck with the blueberries. I've never gotten them to do much and my b-i-l has gotten them to produce but can't keep the birds, coons, and bugs out of them.

But if you want some blackberry vines that make berries big as your thumb, I can fix you right up.

TB, all we do is live out our mortal lives. One way is as good as another. Not doing a dam thing is as good as building a bridge to nowhere. :D

Highgrit, you got the inside track on me.

Mel, you are in danger of being spiritual! Don't waste time on the subject of "the reason". There is none! We just are.

It's insanity-inducing. My other half has sat around doing nothing for the last eleven weeks (that "anniversary" yesterday). For the first six weeks, really couldn't get up for more than a few minutes. Now just wants to modify a boot and get out on a fenceline somewhere. Moral: don't attempt to amputate bits of your lower limbs.

Not having anything to do gets expensive for me. I'll find projects or make projects to do. Upgrades, rebuilding, remodeling. Point is I don't do "nothing" well
 Me to. The last couple of days I've found myself all caught up on the major stuff and tired of going so I've tinkered around the house after the breeding route playing in the garden and bird watching and my wife and kids keep asking if I'm feeling okay. They've never seen me not work a twelve hour day even if the last half was created by me just to be doing something.

I don't know how literal it is meant by doing nothing; as long as we are able bodied, i don't suppose any of us just get up everyday and sit in a chair until bed time, but i am not a person who has to be busy all the time to be satisfied. I have a public job and 130 acres and cattle, but I still don't run around like a chicken with it's head off in the middle of some project all the time; I rather enjoy doing nothing. Doing nothing feels like freedom to me.

I have long vacations from my job, and there are plenty of times I just don't do much of anything. On these bitterly cold days in the winter, I would go put out some hay and head back to the house for coffee and tv and never feel a moments regret. I know a lot of people aren't like this. maybe when we all get to the end, St. Peter will give some kind of bonus for all those that stayed busy all the time, but I doubt it.

Not the way it works. The Bible says ye who are idle will be punished in the hereafter by washing the feet of those who did not idle away the time given them.
