what winter rye to plant

those of you in central Texas--what is the preferred winter rye to plant if you have to broadcast it cause you don't have a grain drill--will common rye get tall enough to bale in early spring--I have to poor boy it for a while.

I have broadcast Marshall ryegrass into coastal and know others that have used passeral plus successfully. Be sure you are using an annual ryegrass and not cereal rye. It is very difficult to get a good stand in an broadcast overseed situation with cereal rye. There is a significant difference in ryegrass and cereal rye so you need to know the difference and plant appropriately. Some google searches might be helpful.

tam 90 works pretty well up early and stays late

I like tam 90, I have used gulf coast a lot because I could buy it at the end of the season from home depot for around $10.00 a bag. You might check one close to you. Be sure and drag your field after applying to get good ground contact. Anything will work , a piece of old chain link with a tire tied on it to a drag harrow. I add oats to mine in one pasture and cereal Rye in another pasture. A little fertilizer goes a long way to helping a thick stand. From now to Oct 15 is when I plant. Good luck.

alot around here are planting TAM90 rye grass.i know people that planted it last year an it saved them big time.they went ahead an bought enough hay to get them through the winter.but they turned 108 cows plus calves on 45acs an gazed till april 1st.an in a 2 month period the cows only ate 6 bales of hay grazing the rye grass.then they baled it 10 days after pulling the cows an got 89 4 by 6 bales.buddy said 50% of it tromped into the ground or it wouldve made 5 bales to the ac.
