About 10 days ago a cow and calf appeared at our place. They could not get into our land but hung around the other side of the fence. Owner finally appeared after several days. It seems they brought one cow and kicked her out into pasture with one hot wire. She left. I said I could probably coax her into our yard and then put her into one of my lots but they used horses and a 4 wheelers to no avail except to make her wild. They finally shot her and I was asked to use a loader tractor to load her which I did. They could not catch the calf, it is wild. After a day or so the calf got in with my cows. We have a closed herd so I am somewhat concerned about disease also the calf is bigger than some of mine and I fear it may take over one of the cows. Now the owner knows where the calf is but I have not heard a thing from him for a few days. No phone as he is Amish. My son and his friend can rope the calf on Saturday but then what? What to do? I don't want to be a bad guy but?
 
"Load it up and take it to the owner" Weird part is I don't know the owners name or location. All I get is it's an Amish guy by Wadena.
 
Its pretty common. Try sharing fences with 7 neighbors with all having cattle. Bulls fight. Cars run through fences. Things happen.

I have had people stop on the roads and open my gates to pen a neighbor's herd in with mine. We finally just put locks on the gates.

Sheriff said it's a civil matter and will not even give advise. Only way to separate would be horse and rope or bring all cattle in and run through our cattle handling system. A BIG job.

I must live in a waaaay smaller town than you. Any time cattle are out & you don't know the owner one of the first calls you're supposed to make is to the Sheriff Dept (they know everyone). Not only do they post it on their blotter, if it's on/near a highway they'll come out & help get them in the nearest pasture.

At what point does the calf become your property? Sending good luck the owner contacts you soon & the calf has been vaccinated.
 
A local locker plant came with a trailer and I put the dead cow on their trailer. Some Amish can use solar powered fencers, depends on the Bishop. We don't brand here.

Thanks. I was curious. Solar would be off the grid so that makes sense. I know little about the Amish we have several Mennonite communities here but have never been around Amish but was always told you could tell their homes by no power going to the house.

What happened to people knowing your neighbors?????? I understand if its just some one that lives in a house down the road and does not do anything AG related , I just about know every single farmer and person that has cattle in my county , If I don't know them personally Ive seen the animals and know where to look. I find this very ODD.

The Amish man in question lives as I understand about 10 miles from me and in another county. So this is not so ODD. As I understand he puts cows in little pastures all over. As yet no one has told me his name and yes I do have good neighbors.
