I have 10 calves that I'm in the process of "feeding out" to bring to butcher. I normally feed corn gluten from the local feed mill in bulk for the last 45 to 60 days. This year I was given roughly 1500 pounds of rice bran and another 1000 pounds of soybean meal. This is way higher in protein than the gluten and I don't want to feed too rich resulting in it just going through the calves to the ground. What could I combine this with to reduce the protein % and make it go a little longer?

4 parts corn: 1 part Rice Bran : 1 part SBM
Parts are by weight not volume

approx
16% protein
88 % TDN
5 % Fat

Need to feed grass or hay too.

Don't have any figures on corn stalks
Heres Cotton Seed Hulls

3p CSH: 1pRH : 1pSBM

15 % Protein
4.3% Fat
59% TDN
I don't think thats going to be good enough to feed out calves .

Can you get beet pulp or Citrus pulp?

PS- you also have to worry about too much fat along with too much protein.

This seems definitely do-able. They have all the grass and hay that they want.

Thanks!

Run some figures-- as high as corn is, it might pay to throw out the free stuff and buy your local Gluten.

You don't need that much protein. That's way to high to finish calves on. Mix about 1200 lbs. of corn with 300 lbs. of cseed hulls, 300 lbs. of your rice bran and 200 lbs. of soybean meal. You'll get your proten down to about 11%, have adequate fat and fiber and good energy level. the calves should grow out great.

Texasbred is right- I was going with the 4 parts corn because I am cheap and was trying make more use of the free stuff and less of the purchased stuff.
Also, I thought using more corn was going leave you with too much free feed left over.
I figured with that ratio that would give you 60-80 days of feed-- based on your post of only feeding 10 head for 45-60 days.

Double check my figures I could be wrong or have the wrong idea.
