I read an article in the TN Cooperative about DH-3 annual ryegrass that was impressive. Does anyone have any experience with this ryegrass compared to Marshall ryegrass as winter pasture for beef cattle? What time do you sow either and how much per acre if you are sowing in establish pastures?

Im not to far from TN but im wondering have any you every used Passerel Plus Ryegrass its made by Pennington Seed, i checked at my local co-op and all they carry is Passerel plus was wondering if this stuff is any count.

We have planted Passeral Plus the past two years and it has done very well here in Mid-GA. We plant in the fall, do not graze or irrigate and bale for hay in the spring. First year we got 188 bales (4x5) off of 16 A, last year, I believe I cut back on seed amount and got 144 bales. I will plant again this year.

Are you guys drilling this rye grass into existing pasture? If you do that how long do you keep the cattle off before grazing? NEver done this before but you guys are making me want to give it a try. Thanks.

I planted 15 acres of Florlina and 15 acres of Marshall several years ago. The early winter ice storms pretty muched wiped them out with providing any grazing, the january ice storm finsihed them off. Thee icestorms had no obvious affect on the winter wheat. That's what we plant now and save a ton of money.

We drilled the Passeral plus in the fall. The forage specialist from Pennington told me to not fertilize until the last week of Feb. The Univ. guy told me to fertilize in the fall. I followed Pennington's recommendation and it worked great. I understand Passeral plus is more cold tolerant than others, but then we don't have those bad winters that some of you get.

It's pretty bad when you can save money by planting something that's $15/bag!! I had a similar experience w/ the rye. Got a rain on it, came up quick and then we had a hot spell and fried it before it could put down a good root. What rate do you plant the wheat Dun?

By itself 50 lbs/acre, interseededd 35 lbs/acre

Assuming a good crop how many 5x6 rolls of ryegrass might an acre yield? Or is that one of those questions like how many acres do I need per cow :)
