What % of your herd do you A.I.

Im curious how many ranchers (farmers) here A.I. and what percentage of your herd do you A.I., not including cows bred by the clean up bull.

Up till last year I AIed 75% of the herd. Cause my clean up bull was less than up to my standards.
I feel I have a pretty good bull in the field now and will only AI probably 25% this year. That involves the cattle related to the bull and the select few that will be bred to produce the occasional show calf.

That % will increase as I end up with more heifers related to the bull. I don't figure he'll be leaving at least for a few years.

probally 60 to 80 % will be AI'ed in 2007

2008 will probally go back to the 50 % ratio , due to improved bulls from personal stock

AI is a pain if you're busy! Have to keep track of heat cycles, and be available to breed the cow when she's in a good standing heat. Hard to do for some!

I will AI a handful of cows / heifers that I want something specific from, otherwise I buy a quality bull that has good bloodlines.

Less than 25%. Where I work, all are AI'd, whomever didn't settle, goes with one of the clean-up bulls.
