what now after youve got black baldies?

I am sorta new to cattle but have some great people to help me that have been in the game for years. I am planning on buying some black heifers to raise up and AI. I am thinking I will breed them black heifers to a Hereford bull. The calves would be black baldies, I would like to keep the heifer calves to raise up and breed to but what breed do you breed to black baldies and what do you strive for? I have searched the boards and have not seen much of anything dealing with what to breed them baldie cattle to. Can someone give me their thoughts?
 
Red Angus Bull 1/2 calves would be red with white face or mottled, 1/2 would be black with white face or mottled.

Black Angus Bull, all calves would be black with white face or mottled.

Polled Hereford bull, 1/2 calves would be black with white face, 1/2 would be red with white face.

Horned Hereford bull, same as above but would get some with horns.
 
Angus, or maybe even through in a little brahman :?: I am not sure, but it is hard to go wrong with a good english breed.

I've got 20 or so baldies in my herd. IMO, do yourself a favor and go with an exotic cross like a Simm, Char, or Limo. Crossing back to Angus would be _ok_ but you'll lose some of the growth you'll get from the 3rd non-British cross. If your heart is set on another Brit cross, go with a Shorthorn. If this is their first calves, just choose a nice shouldered, low birth weight Simm. You won't have any issues on heifers of 900 - 1000 lbs.

Doc brings up an important point, one that I often forget about when answering these sorts of questions. When you breed the baldies, will you be retaining females for replacements? If so, I recommend you stay with the Angus or Hereford bulls. Do the 3rd cross if you're planning on doing nothing but selling the calves.

In a 2 breed rotational breeding system you breed the cows/heifers to the breed of the maternal side, in theory that keeps the heterosis going better then breeding them back to the sire breed.

I would stay away from Charolais, Limousin and Salers. I believe that they come from France and it is our patriotic duty to boycott French products.

KMacG- Approaching this subject from a little more pragmatic point of view - I don't disagree with the premise of boycotting France and French products - for a multitude of reasons-today. However, the majority of Charolais, Limousin and Salers seedstock and progeny have been on the North and South American Continents of the World for more than 30 years, give or take, and boycotting those Cattle Breeds would be about as Politically effective as urinating in the sea for the purpose of raising the tide! :shock: A more effectual plan would be to refuse to import ANYTHING produced in France today - including the PEOPLE!

Got no problem with boycotting French products, but I wouldn't boycott Americans who just happen to raise french cattle. Kind of like people: if they (the cattle) were born here, then they are american cattle. ;-) ;-)
 
I am just talking about me, (and everyone else that really loves this great land of ours) No french cattle. Only good old British breeds. If I had black baldies I would breed them to Murray Greys.
 
If you want maternal stay with Angus and Hereford. The F1 crosses are in big demand. If you want terminal, then use either one of those breeds or use Charlais. That is a super cross as well. If you want to use Charlais. Visit with Mike, he knows more about that than most of us on here. Char cross calves are always in demand. I would use any of the above, but remember to keep it clean, if you get to many breeds, you can get a big mess fast.
 
Doc is right on with his earleir post - what do you want to do with these calves ? If you want to market them as feeders then definitely use black bull (angus, gelbvieh, etc) and get top dollar at your local marketing facility.
If not, then breed them however you want, keep the calves until they are old enough to vote and refer to them as pets. LOL.

GET A GOOD BLACK BULL AND SHOW A PROFIT !!!
