i am going to get some feed custom mixed for some calves i have.they are holsteins that have been weaned.i plan to use a creep feeder.so far i have been feeding them 14% pellets and corn by the bag.i have 34 of them and want to try to put weight on them as fast as possible.what would be a good mix? i am thinking of adding a growth hormone as well.

Sir or mam what will these calves weigh? And are the calves from a southern dairy?
they average around 250lbs and i live in kansas. they are n a small pasture and r also getting prairie hay free choice.

On beef calves that size, I feed a 50/50 blend of corn gluten & soy hull pellets while on grass/hay. Some use a 40/60 blend of ddg & soy hulls. Get cheaper gains than using corn mixes. There are some feed suppliers that will blend different feeds in the delivery truck and not charge the $30+/ton mixing charge so it pays to shop around. Not sure I would feed 100% ddg or corn gluten (at high levels-not over 1% of bw) as the high sulfur levels can cause problems. Wheat midds are another byproduct that can be used with cgf or ddgs. Don't focus entirely on cost per ton as some ingredients have a higher feed value than others.

Especially on holstein calves, you should be able to put 300# + on them without getting them too fat while on a self feeder.

Don't focus entirely on cost per ton as some ingredients have a higher nutritional value than others.
OSU has a ration formulation spreadsheet you can download. I use it to calculate and compare different mixes and feeding rates. Have learned that a 2-300# calf is very feed efficient.

Just my 2 cents worth.

You can continue to feed the 14% creep if it's cheap enough. Mix it about 50:50 with corn. This will cut the protein and increase the energy. This should work as a starter. There are no growth harmones that can be added to feed but implants in the calves will pay for themselves several times over.

what implants would u suggest?

I use Ralgro implants. Lasts about 90 days. If keeping longer, reimplant at 90 days or use compudose. I believe it lasts about 200 days.

If you are having feed mixed, have them add bovatec, rumensin or gainpro. They are not hormones but will increase gains .1-.2#/day. Their effects are supposed to be additive to the boost from implants.

Do not use compudose for breeding heifers. Too small for monensin, bovatec is what you want to use in lighter calves. Had they been steers encore would be my suggestion for choice of implant.
