What is up with this hay?

I bought a round bale of " premium fertilized coastal" the other day. I figured for $15.00 more I was getting a bigger bale of premium. I rolled this bale off the back of the truck wich surprised me. It seems like its light. It is also lime green in color. Probably more suited to horse hay? What should I expect out of it?

Could be awesome hay and could be crap....color may not mean much more than "it's pretty".

May be what some simply call "Clippings". Grass got about half as tall as it needs to be and quit growing so they cut it anywya. Not much production per acre but makes a pretty bale and will usually be pretty green and fine stemmed. May be pretty good but only a test would tell. Bet the cattle eat it tho. ;-)

See if you can flip it over on the flat side. Get a better idea how heavy it is.

What does it weigh? I would have asked but there were no men when we loaded it. I guess I should have asked the HS girl.......at least gave her the benefit of the doubt.

I am not convinced this is the best hay I have bought this year. I'm going by how fast they eat it though :) so..........I'll let you know soon.
I don't know what this stuff really is yet. I just felt it was big tall /normal size 5by 4 but I know it did not weigh much.........it aint the first big bale I have purchased. But If it is full of protein and I get a few more days out of it.............I think these hay rings are a joke though. I see where there is an advantage but last trip to the farm one of my heifers was in the middle of it and I wonder how that would work out if she wasn' smart enough to get back out of it.....

Those look like #1000 bales by the way it sits in the hay ring. Just had some klein baled for $17 per bale like that.

I bought some good #1600+ bales of coastal for $75 delivered.

Thanks for your response. Yall got some rain though...........I really think my long term hay deal has to involve going as far as Seguin to getr some good hay at a fair price. I was down their this spring and they can grow some good hay that way if you want to. I would need to haul at least 3 tractor trailer loads I suppose to make everybody money. They hay is good that way down in South TeXAS i will tell ya.
I think if things go right it gets good rain and can grow like one would expect any where.

Weighed the ones I bought when they were trucked. The small ones were an estimate between a couple neighbors who all used the same guy to bail.... Another neighbor.

You know a bail that ways over about 1200 lbs........if nothing else it makes some noise when it hits the ground..............just saying........not real scientific ...........but just saying.............

the best way to see if a bale of hay is nice an tight is to push your fingers in the bale.if they go in to easy an up to your wrist dont buy the hay.our hay is so tight i can only get my finger tips in the bale.

We haven't got the rain. That area along 59 Victoria, Wharton, El Campo running to Houston got all the rain. There is a lot of hay for sale around there.
