What is this - polliwog ?

A big tadpole, larval form of frog, Genus Rana. Has to be a bullfrog, too big for other frogs.

In all classes of vertebrate, identifying larva and juveniles is a challenge. Some juvenile snakes look nothing like the adult.

Yes lots of huge bullfrogs
Cant hardly sleep out at night for loud croaking

Nope. Did you read Tow Sawyer as a youngster?

Mostly, I remember the adventures we had. There was a polliwog pond, railroad tracks, a lumber yard, and lots of factories nearby.....

I with you. Polliwod, polliwog are tiny catfish. They never get very big. We had a pond full of them but you could not use them for bait on trot lines. Illegal because they are a member of the catfish family. We put some big catfish in the pond and they fed on the polliwods.

Bullhead Catfish - Yeah, a pollywog is a frog. But in Texas, for some reason, they also call these cats pollys.

From a catfishing journal

Usually means small bullhead cat here. I have heard it used as a tadpole too though

I didn't have any bull frogs for along time .. one spring me and my son were walking past the pond and I saw a water snake.. we went and go our 22's and came back .. I started scanning the overhanging brush and counted 13 water snakes .. we killed all 13 that day .. a few months later and you can hear the bullfrogs during the day now.. I counted 23 last Saturday night ..

Of the 5 ponds we have, 3 have bass and bluegill, 2 have bass, bluegill and channel cats. The 2 ponds with cats there isn;t a frog to be heard or seen. The other 3 are loaded with them. One of the 2 with cats used to have frogs until I put cats in it about 4 years ago, bye bye frogs.
