As you can see the mother is a purebred Black Angus.
The father is a composite of a purebred Black Angus
and a purebred Charolais. (skunk tail)

Where did the red come from?
Who was cheating on whom?

First, I can't "see" that the dam is a "purebred" Black Angus cow. She's black. Is she registered? Does she have a registration #? The sire is a composite. Did you breed a registered Angus to a registered Char to produce him? I'd say you have a cute calf, but the color isn't a total surprise, considering that some Angus carry the red gene....

OK, take my word for it, as I know both her momma and popa were registered.

NO & no.

No, we bought him. But that is what I was told.

I'd say you have a cute calf,

I have two more that are exactly the same except they are black where this one is red. And one other that is black with white rings on his tail.

but the color isn't a total surprise, considering that some Angus carry the red gene....

Now that is my best guess too! It will be interesting to see if we get more red ones.

Wish that calf was mine. I know a woman who pays big bucks for unique colored animals if she thinks they are cute. I'm sure that one would meet her standards.

Mother was a red carrier and daddy was a red carrier. Some angus/charlais crosses will produce the skunktail.

How can one determine the mother is purebred angus by looking at that picture? Looks like a black cow to me.

I see three posibilities.

1. Mum is a red factor, and dad is a red factor.

2. Mum or dad have something else in their pedigree, I'd be thinking pinz, maine, longhorn, shorthorn

3. Neighbour has a pinz/maine/longhorn/shorthorn bull who has been visiting.

The White tail is ~dominant in Pinzgauers. It can get smaller as Pinzgauer influence wanes but it never skips a generation. I don't know enough about the other breeds to comment with any authority; but I am inclined to believe that a Pinzgauer or Longhorn bull went on a road trip.

Beg to differ with you. The main photo was taken May 26, the insert was taken September 2nd, and she is even blacker now. If they come in today I will try to get a current shot.

There are no other breeds within 10 miles of here that I know of, so a midnight visitor is totally out of the question.
Plus I also have two others with the same markings born two weeks earlier and a ring tail one born a week before that. So a one time visit is out of the question.
Plus he would have had to fight off all three herd bulls to be this successful.

IMO, the red came from in daddy’s Levies! Or mommy simply had rusty pipes!!

You need to spend some time looking at Angus. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes these days.

Wrong, not all black Angus carry the recessive red gene. Most are homozygous black.
