For a beef steer bottle baby? Couple day old calf that a 2nd calf cow doesn't want - not going to fight with her for many more days. Calf is smart as a whip, but cow is missing a few screws. Hobbles would work if she just stood and didn't whip around and toss him into the air with her head.

Yeah, dumb cows are no fun to fight with, but you gotta have more patience than they have endurance.. My C section heifer took about 2 weeks to accept my milk thief calf, and she loves it now.. debateably takes better care of it than her real mother.

Oh that could be done, but is more hassle added on top of an already irritating situation. Believe me, I aim for no-nonsense cattle in every sense of the word. Patience has never been my virtue. When they fail at their main job (mothering), I am quick to fire them with no pity. This cow has already received her layoff notice with this stunt - whether it is this summer or in the fall, has yet to be determined.

Here good quality 95-100 lb holstein bull calves will still range from $240 - $340 on the same day - same sale.
55-60 lb jersey bull calves $60 - $70
True beef calves are far fewer and therefore have been holding stronger.
 
Likely get 5 or 600 for it on the right sale day here. Some of the bigger Holstein calves (couple weeks old) are bringing upwards of 4. And the day olds are bringing 2 or 300 as long as they're bright.
 
Well, she got the ultimatum this morning to either accept it, or she was a dead cow walking. She must have gotten the message because she let it suck this morning with little interference and actually started licking it by the afternoon.

No, I wouldn't do something like that. Junk cows go to hamburger, not someone else's herd.

I easily resist the urge to gamble....

If I am going to buy stock it will be from someone I can look in the eye and know where to find them....not an anonymous name in the stockyard gambling pen.
