what is cat gut???

I was going through the oline catalog that I sometimes order supplies and vaccines from and I saw something called cat gut?
Is this really CAT gut and if it is, what in the world do you do with it??? Thanks I was just too curious not to find out.

It used to be the only thing that was used for sutures. Some vets still use it over the newer synthetics.
And yes, it's exactly what it says it is.

Cat gut was originally from sheep intestines. Don't think it is species specific now.

Yup...was used for internal sutures, would disolve in a few weeks. DMc
