What is a lizard?

I know the question sounds goofy, but I'm trying to get a feel for what was meant in a 1902 Guernsey county, Ohio newspaper article in which a distant relative was reported to have "removed a ten inch lizard" from his cow that had been there "for three days." I'm suspecting that the noun has some other meeting. I've lived in that part of Ohio and never seen a reptile that long, or known a cow to knowingly eat one, so assume the word has some other meaning common to the region and period. Any historians out there?

Oh for sure, like Alan stated, ask the same question on beginers board or maybe health and nutrition. :nod: Everything else board and coffee shop are really used more for everyones personal agenda.
