thanks- she seems to be a good cow I almost culled her this spring because she started losing condition over the winter but she had a big calf on her. As soon as I weaned the calf she started shaping up so I kept her. I have most of my cows in fall calving this year and will continue to move them closer to late winter and spring as the next few years. its a slow process when they are used to calving year round.

It is a slow process, but any changes with cattle seem to take a long time. It will be worth it in the long run.

Why do you think she loses condition? Is she a heavy milker?

She had a huge bull calf on her last year. I gonna see how she fairs with this Heifer calf this year. I've only had her for year and half.this is her second calf so I don't have much of history on her.

I don't get too concerned about them losing some condition (ours are usually pretty fat anyhow) as long as they breed back, etc...

I have one cow with a big bull calf on her, fair sized cow, who keeps her condition well and never seems to eat much... I like that... Her maternal sister has her first calf this year, looking like he'll be into the 600lb range... she used to be really fat but she's lost condition over the summer, but I separate out the cows that had the first time calf and feed them better than the rest of the herd... if I have an old cow I'll put her with them as well... I found it pays to group the herd by nutritional needs and make sure the young ones get what they need...
