Hello all,
I am new to horses and have a question. I first talked to some local people about this and each had “the best way to feed a horse.”
I have 5 horses age range is 4yr 12yr 28yr 21yr 22yr
The 25yr is about to be fertilizer her knees are getting bad
The 12yr Arabian is ridden by young kids around the farm a few times a week
The 22 Walker and 21 Quarter are being ridden by me and my wife about 3 times a week (we are just walking around for about 45 min) until we feel they are ready for the kids to ride. They all live on open pasture (about 6 acres shared with 3 cows). My question is… will the Bermuda be enough nutrients for them? Or should I feed alfalfa? The fields provide enough grass for them to eat; one of the pastures is about 12 inches thick! So I feel the quantity is right, but not sure about the quality. I have heard a little of everything. I live in southern Arizona and for the winter I plant rye grass for them to eat they have lots of water and shade oh I have a mineral block out for them. What else should I do?

No problem - just keep an eye on your pasture to make sure they have grass and aren't losing weight. Horses tend to trample out a pasture pretty good and it doesn't take them long to do it. In the event they do trample out the grass, then you will have to supplement them with hay. I would not supplement with alfalfa, though, I would feed them a good quality grass hay.

If you notice that the older horses are losing weight you may want to give them a senior feed. For all of my older ones I usually soak their feed with water. Especially the ones I've had with teeth problems.

For the one with the bad knees you could try some joint supplements. Sometimes a little Glucosamine and/or MSM will give the horse a little longer.
