What is your fly control program? This year the flies are horrendous! We checked our cows on the rented pasture last night and the flies, gnats and various flying creatures are so thick its maddening. We have 25 cows over there and I need to do something to help them out!

We've been using Wind and rain minerals with fly control for 4-5 years now and it really seems to help. Just get them started before the flies start.
But make sure there are no other cattle nearby. If there are, it is a waste of money.

Correct, nearest cattle to me are at least a mile.

If you can get close enough to them, spray them with a garden sprayer. I pen mine and then run about 10 at a time of them into a smaller pen where I can get close enough to spray them good. It lasts two days to two weeks depending on the rain and how far they wade into the pond.
Not realistic if you have 300 head but works good for under 100.
I just use a permethrin product.

This year we are using a pour on called Prozap Stand Guard.
In years past I've used fly tags and IGR mineral.

Permethrin in a pump sprayer works for us. For up to a couple weeks. Like someone said until they wade deep or rain. Also those back rubs that you tie between 2 trees might help

IGR with garlic really helps. The garlic is excreted through the tear ducts and almost no flies in the eyes. If you run out it takes about 2 weeks to bring back under control.
Do you have the name of the product so I can figure out where to find it?
Altosid IGR. You can get it at most any farm supply store, Co-Op, Valley Vet/online stores.
I use Martin's Fly Ban and spray my cattle with an applicator/drench gun.

In the house I use a fly swatter. Wife has a hand held vacuum that sucks them up. The cows...... nothing. They are on several thousand acres of mountain pasture where it is either on foot or horseback. Man working on fence up there rolled his quad and ended up in the hospital. We did put fly tags on the calves.

I think I can't use this with a nursing mama, am I right!
I can't find the citation right now, but I am fairly certain that it is safe for use in lactating cows. The fly control ingredient does not enter the cow's bloodstream or milk supply, but passes directly through to the manure, where it kills the fly larvae.

I used to but couldn't get the PB08 for a while. Plus, I followed the instructions but it seemed like it was too harsh/strong and burned the cows. Never had a problem before but a lot of them started running for cover when I started spraying. I also used just permethrin with oil for a while but eventually went back to Fly Ban.
This is Grit's recipe:
This one is similar to UltraBoss, 6oz permithion, 6oz PBO8 and 1 qallon corn oil. I add a pint of diesel fuel because I use old 5 liter pour on wormer containers and application gun.
This one is similar to Ultra Sabre, 3 oz Lambda-cyhalothrin, 6oz PBO8 and 1 gallon of corn oil, I also add diesel fuel to this mix.
Prentox PBO-8 Synergist is an emulsifiable concentrate that synergizes most commonly used insecticides. It contains the only US-made Piperonyl Butoxide as its active ingredient and it is used as an additive in many insecticides to help enhance their performance and resistance management. It is designed to help improve control of insects and mites using lower rates. With its low risk toxicological profile, PBO-8 is safe for humans and the environment. PBO-8 can be used in a variety of different locations from residential dwellings to livestock housing. It works with different types of fogging, misting, or spray equipment to let you use it according to site or pest requirements. But, it is not to be used in outdoor residential misting systems. When mixing PBO-8 with insecticides or acaracides, please do so as listed on the product label. This product has no insecticidal activity on its own.
I use a gun full on cows, 2 gun fulls on bulls and a half a gun or less on calves. I start behind the ears and go to the tail head. The recommend dose is 3 ml per 100 lb. Reminder, the under use of insecticides creates immunity and doesn't work nearly as well.

I only use 4 oz of PB08 per gallon. I don't use diesel in any mix I am applying to cattle. Have seen too many issues. I must as they eat in a line.
