What distinction to be remembered for.

I fell some timber in that part of the world. Some pretty remote difficult country to get around in. Certainly not part of the world to go into this time of the year if you are not a real honest to goodness outdoors-man. And even then you better be packing a lot of gear.

So.....You find the mushrooms, eat the mushrooms, and then start imagining you see sasquatch in the caves!

Not that kind of mushrooms. Chantrells (sp) a great tasting fall mushroom. That country south of St. Helen has lots of lava tube caves. They were created when there was large lave flows. The lava on the surface hardened and the lava under it kept flowing leaving an empty space. I went down into Ape Cave (one of the most famous lave tube) as field trip with a historical geology class. it was real interesting.

It's very sad to me that people lost their lives over this. We live about 35 miles from a national forest area, Red River Gorge, and also Natural Bridge state park by it. The area is very popular for camping, hiking, mountain climbing canoeing, there's a zip line, and at the state park there's a sky lift.
The terrain can be very difficult, and dangerous. Steep grades and abrupt drop offs can be deadly. Quite a few people get lost each year. There is a search and rescue team from the area that literally risk their lives to save others.
It's a really scenic area with with a wide variety of plants and wildlife. A lot of our BnB guests go there.
The last time we went there we stopped in the tourist info center to get some brochures. I was a mix of amused and disappointed all at the same time to see that the Sasquatch culture had reached there too. There was a large tapestry on the wall featuring symmetrically shaped and spaced trees but one tree had been left off and instead was a Sasquatch figure. There were other references as well. In an online advertisement for the area sometime after that they portrayed a Sasquatch figure standing by the welcome sign.
Needless to say we didn't see anything except the landscape along our brief walk on a trail.
Anyways some of the trails can be treacherous especially during wet or winter weather, and off the trails is definitely not advisable anytime.
There's been some of those Sasquatch shows that have gone to the area and filmed.
It's like everything else, people see it on television or on the internet and think there's something to it.
I reckon. It's time for Sasquatch tv content to come with a PSA.
I believe that sightings and so called encounters fall into 3 categories,
1. Outright hoaxes.
2. Imaginations, ie overactive imaginations, eyes playing tricks as they say, this can sometimes link to number 3
3. Mistaken identifications.
I believe there can be credible people that see or hear things and while they maybe can't explain it, probably a more experienced outdoors type person could easily identify it as a more common known animal or occurrence.
I believe other known wildlife is responsible for the so called sightings and encounters.
I've had some experiences where I could say well it might have been something else, but I'm confident it was black bears and deer.
With as many hunters, trail cameras, home cameras, people everywhere, it's not logical that something that size could elude proof for so long. There would be property damage and other signs.

The area these people ventured into is over 2.25 mil acres. The vast majority has no roads. Just a few well scattered logging roads. No people. Both Mt St Helen and Mt Adams are in that area. I have driven through there north to south in the summer. It takes a good solid 3 hours of driving. I wouldn't even attempt that this time of the year. You simply wouldn't make it and the next person to come along would be sometime in May. It seems that every year here in the PNW we lose some people who venture into areas that are best not gone into this time of the year. Some are people following their GPS and take the wrong road. And some are people like these who have no business going there.
