I'm sitting here trying to not say anything watching my 9yo daughter trying to learn to crochet.
Got her her own set of hooks and I picked up some yarn I liked to make myself a scarf. She claimed my yarn.

It looks terrible, but she is trying. I just have to remind myself of that. She got it all tangled up, but I say nothing.
I just go over and remind her how it is done and walk away.
She is so proud that she is doing it.

Everybody has to start somewhere-its great she wants to learn that and try it. My Mother tried teaching me how to sew when I was 9 or 10, the project a flannel nghtgown, it never got finished as I did not have the patience for sewing.

GMN both sewing machines are packed away, but that is coming.
She likes to watch me cook. I explain things to her as I cook.
She's getting the hang of it.

I know Jo. She said she made a necklace instead of a scarf. Now she wants to make a matching bracelet. :D

My son is showing a interest in cooking, I'm all for it help in the kitchen can't beat that. I think kids like cooking as you can take a mix of flour sugar, and other things, and in the end you get something good, that looks totally different from what you started with-its a creative thing, like clay and ceramics.

I have a son that's 34 yr old now and started cooking when a young boy.Since I raised 2 boys and 2 girls by myself I taught him cooking. He still does most the cooking at his home.
I also do most all the cooking at my home, but with my situation it's a matter of survival.Granny never was very handy at cooking. :) :)

All the really good cooks are men.
Except maybe pastries. All the women in my mothers family can make a pie which you'd walk across broken glass barefoot to get. Coconut cream, apple, rhubarb/strawberry, 10K variations of chocolate. Pecan. You name it.
And surprisingly, these gals are all lean as a longhorn.

Good for you taking time to actually teach your child. Mom used to make all of my Barbie clothes. She would knit gowns and pants. My Barbie had the largest wardrobe. I loved them all. However, I wanted to make something too. So she sat me down and taught me a basic stitch which I knitted into a square, sewed together and voila a dress. It had uneven stitches, holes in some places, crooked but I was proud of my dress, even if Mom's did look better.
I have just taken up crocheting again. I find the YouTube tutorials really helpful on some of the fancier stitches.

To answer the question, "you started" teaching a 9 year old not only a skill but patience as well. Children that have parents like this are more self reliant as adults, have more self confidence to do "anything", and are well adjusted to real life. I say, GOOD JOB!
