what breed would you recommend...

if you were looking for a heifer for a 14 year old girl that is wanting to show in 4-H and FFA. She has past experience showing beef and dairy, has been around animals all her live so she is knowledge to that extent. She has tried Charolais and that breed just doesnt seem to work for her. Maybe it was just the 2 cows she had were not made to be show cows, not sure. Her brother has a red angus cow/calf pair that will be shown. The red angus has been awesome to work with but she is thinking she wants a different breed that her brother. What breeds would you recommend? There is a guy down our road that has polled herefords?? any thoughts on that breed?

honestly ive tried angus gelb an herfs...the easiest one for me was the gelb...bought from a production sale an had her halter broke in like a week very gentle and loved to be worked with

From an ease of handling standpoint, probably the most easy to work with are:

Gelbvieh, Simmental, Shorthorn, and Herefords. There are gentle cattle and nuts in all breeds, but the four above tend to be more gentle in general.

As a parent it would be easier on you to have both of them with the same breed (management wise). Just make sure the calves are in different classes by age.

Herefords. Don't own a single one but have helped plenty of kids break calves and the Herfs are the gentlest I've encountered.

I agree -- not just because I am a Hereford breeder. I showed Simmental in high school and as an ag teacher, I have helped a ton of kids break calves. Herefords are easy. Hereford bulls more so than heifers, of course bulls can't be shown as much.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. There are several major shows that do; Houston, East Texas State Fair, Indiana State Fair, Kentucky State Fair, Arkansas State Fair, Oklahoma/Arkansas State Fair, Wisconsin State Fair, and of course the North American in Louisville.

If someone is looking for a 4-H or FFA heifer there is a good chance that they will be showing AOB as there probably won't be enough of any one breed to have an individual show in most areas.
