what breed and gender?

I need to get a couple of weaned calves to put on some grass. These will be for slaughter not breeders. Is there an overall consensus on the best breed or cross for this and if it makes a lot of difference in whether they are steers or heifers?

Assuming you want to slaughter at an early age a so called british breed is preferable as they tend to work better on only grass and mature quicker. Hereford or angus will be easiest to find at a reasonable price, or a cross between them. Steers do not cycle, otherwise not a lot of difference.

It's not based on age but on condition/finish

Right ,as well as if you want grass finished or grain finished.

Why not get a couple of Holstein steers, they are very good grass or grain finished. Have butchered grain finished at 15 months and grass finished at 28 months, the beef was amazing both ways .

I will be grass feeding only (except for haying in the short Winter). I thought a beef breed yields better meat to bone ratio as well as flavor. Is this incorrect? Oh, do you want to see photos of us building our new house and barns? We just finished about a year ago, so I took lots of photos.

That has been discussed endlessly here, but dairy breed beef finish very well and are also marbled very well and are extremely tasty. The up side as well is that they are usually calm and you can buy a weened calf for cheaper than a beef calf or if you are up to it bottle feed them yourself . Just remember that grass finished takes about a year longer .

Would love to see more pics of everything as well as the animals.
