What are you going to do if ....

Go out and talk to the cows, so that I don't have to turn on the TV and listen to the BULLSHYTfrom both sides

It'll probably be up and spending again before I even find out it's been shut down. If they do shut it down I hope the lockup everything, send everyone home and turn the lights out on DC.

In all seriousness, what would happen? In the short run I don't think it would affect me at all but I don't really know about the long haul.

It may not affect us immediately but it is sure likely to have an effect on those holding our debt overseas that we can't seem to do anything but gridlock in our government these days. Gone is the ability to compromise for the common good. Just my way or no way seems to be the operating method these days. Wisconsin is another example. Don't solve the problem, just score political points and get your face on national TV.

Meanwhile the rest of the world watches what they thought was the leader of the free world paralyzed in polarized political gridlock. And maybe they decide they don't really want to hold our debt after all.

By the way, here is a very interesting graph I ran across:

Jim I don't suppose you could translate that graph into English. I am sure it denigrates the Republicans or you wouldn't have posted it but I suck at graphs and don't understand what point you are trying to make.

This graph is just facts/history out of the "non-partisan" Congressional budget office.

It was presented in an ag marketing meeting I attended recently as a factor likely to affect ag prices including beef.

The graph came to mind thinking about Jo's shutdown question which reminds me of the gridlock in Washington. This is an escalating problem both parties need to work together on. Except working together and compromising to find solutions to problems does not seem to be on the horizon these days. jmho.

We rely on foreigners confidence in the US to finance our debt - at least until we bring it down.

And regardless of which side of the aisle you are on, a loss of confidence by the rest of the world in the US financial system is NOT a good thing. Some seem set to try to induce conflict to prove a point or points. At this time in history especially we need to work together to solve problems, not induce a government shutdown out of spite. How childish. This is a bipartisan problem (as shown on the graph) and needs bipartisan solutions.

Does that mean no welfare checks or food stamps going out? We will be rich in a few days.

If that happens I'm investing in electronics, because within a week every working man in the US will be missing a TV and Stereo.

Well if they shut it down and the other countries won't loan us any more of there money, that would solve the need for raising the debt ceiling. Do we still got to pay the jackasses in DC for the time the goverment is shut down. If they shut it down at least the sobs won't be spending.

I really did want to know what the graphs say. I have a kind of dyslexia when it comes to reading graphs and I was hoping you really would explain what the point of both graphs is.

I guess the old expression "Charity starts at home" comes to mind. we just went through 2 years of the worst period I have seen in my lifetime of shoving it down not just the minority parties throat but the whole countries throat. Now that the advantage is gone we suddenly find ourselves talking about bipartisanship. That concept sounds great in theory but it has to be iniated by the ruling party and after what just happened in this country it is my fervent belief that it just isn't in the cards anytime soon.
The ruling party still holds the presidency and the Senate. Wouldn't the bipartisan effort have to start with fastracked legislation that the Majority in the house could embrace, and move forward quickly. How can the minority party in both of those branchs of government initate anything they do no have the votes.

BTW the political grandstanding in Wisconsin is definately not limited to one side and one side only. The population of Wisconsin has doubled lately with all the "concerned citizens" that have been bussed in from out of state.

I think at the end of the day what needs to happen is for America to face up to the fact that where partisan politics is concerned the quest for bipartisan legislation of any kind is somewhat similar to the unending quest to actually locate the clean end of a ...........tu#d.......just my :2cents:

Chart is usless garbage. Doesn't show the decline in the buying power of the $. Every American that has bought anyting realizes this.. If you peg it to the purchaseing power of a dollar at any time 10 years or longer ago the "mountain" will turn into a cliff.

If I could read the dam thing it might actually mean something. The bottom half with "republicans" is stated as a %......% of what??? The top half with "Dems" is in Trillions.....trillions of what?? A graph is worthless without some explanation of what the hel it represents....I thought to get any kind of comparison on anything you had to have "2" of everything.

As for the leader of the free world being strangled by gridlock, more than anything he is the bottleneck in the whole system. The guy couldn't make a decision if his life depended on it. Apparently somebody forgot to tell him that when you are the President of the United States you cannot "punt" or vote "present".
