The timber was damaged very bad during hurricane Katrina and was not as heavy of a stand as it should have been.

Planted Argentina bahia and common bermuda. There is also some native crab grass in it.

Deepsouth I have some trees that I just had clearcut and am in the process of doing the same thing. What all did you do in your clean up. chopping, digging stumps, etc.
 
You did a fine job Deepsouth. My cows will eat the crab grass first, is there any summer clover in the pasture?

We did dig all the stumps. We had mostly longleaf pine which has, as you will know being from north Florida, deep tap roots. We also had some oak mostly water oak and some southern red oak. My daddy, brother and I did all the work. My brother is a logger and he logged it. We used his dozed and my brother-in-laws track hoe and farm tractors. The pine required a pretty deep hole to be dug on one side but would then pop right out. The bigger hardwood however required quite a bit more digging and usually help from the doze to get them out. This was a mid sized track hoe. We pushed everything into wind rows and burned them. We would then push what was left from two rows into one row and burned it again. What you can't see in my pictures is a deep hollow where we finally pushed everything that didn't burn, mostly the bigger stumps, I may try burning them again this fall. Next we picked up roots by hand, 45 acres worth :cry: we did use root takes on the back of tractors also but they missed a lot. The one thing we did discover was that the root rake did do a very good job of leveling the ground so we went over the whole thing with root takes then picked up the roots. It may have been more than was actually needed but its clean enough I believe I could cut and bale hay on it.

Wow, quite a project. What do you figure it costs an acre to clean it up? Does the logging pay for that also, or is it mainly done for the land? gs

Well that's not easy to answer. I could tell you how much we spent on fuel but because we had the equipment and did not pay ourselves labor it would be hard for me to say exactly what we have got in it. We also put a 5 strand barb wire fence up that is 1 1/4 miles long. As for the timber paying for it we did the whole job for about what the taxes will be on the timber sale and yes this cost is tax deductable on the timber sale.
