What other forages will give me good return for pasture in my area? Have fertile soil and all that we have out is fescue. Would like to get more pasture production out of what we have.

Me fescue pastures lasted me until the middle of December this year. I have had no luck with orchard grass here. It seems that it doesn't want to germinate or after it gets a few inches tall it's done. Keep fert/lime in range per soil tests. What I have tried in the past is to disc 10' wide strips through pasture after killing all with roundup and then plant orchard grass but, it doesn't seem to take the abuse that fescue will. Neither does Rye grass. I was thinking about Sudan or something like that but, after look extensively on the web I can't seem to find any useful info on sudan or anything similar. IMO-take whatever forage mother nature has given you and manage it the best you can. If there are little or no legumes in your pastures, they will probably be your best addition. Quality management our most cost effective input. There are no silver bullet grasses.
You seem very interested in learning about grasses & grazing, therefore I highly recommend reading Jim Gerrish's book "Management Intensive Grazing" . This book has sections on soils, growing quality pastures, matching forage & animals, managing pastures & animals, extending the grazing season, animals care, fencing (non-olympic), water systems and designing grazing systems. I believe this book will answer a lot of peoples grass & grazing management questions. Here is a link where this book can be ordered.

I just ordered the book online. Thanks for the info. I know I need to take what I've got but, the proper mix of pasture forage can add to my bottom line.Thansk for the info.
