weird cyst

We were working my cows today when we noticed a lump under a black brangus cows neck. Vet decided to stick a needle in it and out came about a half cup of some foul smelling black liquid. He kept feeling around and decided to cut it open. Inside was a fist sized ball of brown hair surronded by a white filmy looking skin.
He said he had seen that before on other cattle but it usually happened on there sides.
Anybody else see this before?

That really sounds nasty! How would hair get to be in a ball under the skin?

He didnt say what it was called. I had my camera in the truck. I wish I had taken a picture.

Sounds like an inverted hair follicle, one of my horseshad one on her mid line right behind her withers, just kept it clean, not much of a problem

This one sounds as if it was totaly under the skin, and kept developing hairs and exudate, very weird

have one black cow with something similar, however her's is external, kind of like a weaping cyst, you can squeez it and express the goop out and it clears up for several months, its just like a giant pore where stuff collects
