Weather effect on AI

We are going to pull CIDR'S on 20 head of heifers tomorrow, it was 76 here yesterday and tonight a low of 32 is forecast. I am afraid this is going to have a bad effect on conception rates. I have no scientific study to back this up just past experience. It seems in past years if we have a big change in weather during our AI work conception will go down. Has anyone else ever had this happen or studied the effect of weather on conception?

The only times that we've had weather affect conception was whe nthe days were unusally hot and it didn;t cool down at night. Although AIing during the winter I had a harder them breeding because my arm and hand would get numb from being in a 100 degree cow and pulling it out in 20 degrees then putting it back in the next cow.

:lol2: Almost like my wife does it except she slides it down by "boobs" insead of "bibs". :lol2:
 
Often wondered what effect, if any, the brief cold shock that occures in the winter has on the semen viability. What I means is you take the straw from warm water, quickly put it in a colder gun, stick it in you shirt, pull it out in cold air then in the cow.

If you warm the gun enough before you put the semen in you wouldn;t lose many at that point and not that many when you pull it out and stick it in the cow. The few that you lose shouldn;t make much difference if the semen was put up properly and stored/handled properly up to the time you use it.
 
It isn't the gun I am concerned about, it is the change in temps during the set up period we had 76 degree temps with high humidity it was just plain hot then it changes to the 30's that night I am afraid of the impact to conception rates that type of temperature variation will have on this group of cattle. (This is the heifer group) we start the cows on the 21st of December. So hopefully we won't have these extreme types of change during their set up. As I said earlier I haven't read anything about this type of weather change I have found articles that talk about heat and conception but not a change from heat to cold during the set up. I don't know if I am explaining myself very well my husband tells me I could confuse a one car funeral!

Sense I went to AI school a couple years ago, I constantly read everything I see about AIing. I have never read anything that sugest that weather other then the heat of summer effects the conception rate. If you take all the proper care while AIing winter should work well.
 
If you would, let us know how your rates are on this round of AI. I have always been an advocate of AI and promote it whenever I can.
 
Well it has been awhile since I went to AI school, I started trying to remember just how long and believe it was around fifteen years ago. I have never been very good at it, we considered it a blessing when we met Mike our AI tech. Mike worked as a herdsman in a large dairy for years he does an awesome job and is a pleasure to work with, he also beats my conception rates by anywhere from 40 -50%, I might get 35% Mike will usually get 75-85% when your doing a large number of cows that adds up to some bucks. It will be interesting to see how we do this year I never count on high % conception (with AI) on heifers. We are breeding 20 heifers tomorrow then on the 31st of December we will AI 40 head of cows. We will finish up on 1/6/12 flushing one cow and putting eggs in recips. I am setting up 24 recips after that we are done and we let the bulls clean up for us.

Surprises me that so many people comment about having some problem settling heifers. We have always been just the reverse. I good healthy heifer in our operations (dairy or beef) bred at the right time and with a good tech settles probably at least 95% of the time on first service.

I think we do ok when we catch them in natural heat but when we sync our % goes down. It is a trade off but time is an issue since we all work off farm jobs. Do you sync your heifers or get them in a natural heat? Our embryo guy gave us a new protocol to try but we got it to late for this breeding season we will try it next year.

We use to synch some of them when we dairied and still had the great results. With beef cattle we just breed on observed heats. I will admit that I would put my wife up against about any AI Tech around tho. She's good. :clap:

I always thought that heifers were easier to settle first service then cows, but not by much. But we've never used sync on heifers and only did it a couple of years with cows. Since we do all of our own AI it just seems like a lot more hassle then it's worth to sync them. And I can;t arm a dozen cows in a day like I could in my younger days.

Are you just synching them or are you using timed AI?
 
We sync all of ours and the virgin heifers are a piece of cake. I would say we get about 90% on the heifers and about 65-75% on the cows. Where we have some problem is on get 1st calf heifers rebred.
