I was supposed to ship cows Monday - poured rain. No problem we will do it Wednesday - woke up to a 1/4" of ice. Couldn't get ahold of the market to see if they were open as they were supposed to have the roads passable by about 9:30 or so this morning. Turned out the roads never really got to where i really wanted to put a loaded trailer on them. So my question is do the barns stay open even in bad weather? Also do you notice the sales not being as good on bad weather days due to lower volume, less buyers and the cattle being shipped wet so fear of pneumonia, shipping fever etc. is higher? Just curious if anybody sees a trend or for Denver, Kenny and the rest of you that buy a lot of cattle what you think?

Everything that can hurt the market will. Many days if its real bad there is not enough cattle to make it worth the trucking. If there is ICE I dont even take a trailer and it dont matter how cheap they are I dont bid. I could leave my cattle at the stockyard but then there is the issue of frozen water and hauling hay so its just not worth it.
 
On a better note if the cows you are selling are slaughter cows the same weather makes the numbers low so when the weather improves the price is usually higher.
 
That was kind of what I thought. I do know any excuse to buy them cheaper is a good one in their book- mine too I guess if I am buying. Stinks when your selling them tho. At least the checks here lately have made the hits less noticeable or maybe more bearable is a better term. Maybe it will work out for Friday and the buyers will be short on cattle! Thanks for the input.
 
Smokin I only really buy at blackstone and they do operate when weather is bad and depending on the severity of the weather depends on how many will show.
