Weaning help!

Hello everyone! We weaned heifers early this year and after putting them back with the herd one of the heifers started nursing on the mom after the mom had calved. Now it’s taking all the calf’s milk. What have yall done in situations like this?

Put the calf back where it was when you were weaning it, until you can sell it.

When I am in these situations I always ask my myself... Do I like messing with one off problems or cashing checks?

Now days, it's a pretty easy decision. Sell the heifer... cash the check.

A learned bad habit probably isn’t going to change. If you can’t keep her separated permanently from mom it’ll keep happening. And sometimes they’ll suck another wet cow .

Definitely separate immediately. Either by trailer to the sale barn and collect a good check or for at least 6 months in another pasture if she was here. I wouldn't put her back with other cows without a crown weaning ring for a year or so to be sure there's no chance of nursing issues if she stayed. How long was she weaned and separated from mom?

Our heifers don’t get near a wet cow until they start calving themselves. Some still go to sucking and fulfill their lifetime occupation early.

We also never put our heifers back with cows until after they have their first calf... and usually run the heifers in one pasture separately, and after they wean their calf and are confirmed bred, they will get integrated into the "dry cow herd"..for their next calf... still have had a couple to go to sucking and they LEAVE...

I put heifers back with into the cow herd to winter them before calving. Wouldn’t consider putting them together sooner.

Putting heifers back doesn't bother me but I'm pretty strict about culling for non-sense. I'm a firm believer that when you let outlying behavior go, it spreads.

Feed her bones to the dogs.
And build a canoe out of her skin.

Perhaps 3 margaritas and getting on cattle today is a bad idea.

Having gone through the records on both registered and commercial operations I've come to the conclusion this is hereditary. Sell the heifer and cull the cow.
